SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After tying for second place at the Furman Intercollegiate, Chattanooga senior Wes Gosselin and Wofford senior Andrew Novak share this week’s Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week award for all competition from March 22-28. The selection is made by the league office.
Gosselin and Novak tied for second at the 48th edition of the Furman Intercollegiate, both shooting 10-under-par 206 to finish one stroke out of first place.
Gosselin opened with a 1-under 71 Friday before shooting a 5-under 67 in round two and closing with a 4-under 68 on the final day of the tournament to leap two spots into second. The 10-under score was a career best for Gosselin and marked just the eighth time in school history that a Moc has finished at least 10 shots under par. It was the first time since current Web.com Tour pro Stephan Jaeger won the 2012 NCAA Bowling Green Regional with a 13-under 203.
The Knoxville, Tennessee, native moved into third place in school history with 56 career rounds of par or better.
The weekly award is the first of Gosselin’s career.
Novak earned his second weekly award this season and fifth of his career, tying the league record set by Georgia Southern’s Aron Price from 2003-05 and matched by GSU’s Scott Wolfes from 2013-14.
The Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, native opened with a 5-under 67 and bettered that with a 6-under 66 in round two, the low round of the day, to take the lead into the third round. He shot 1-over 73 to drop to second but still finished with his eighth straight top-10 finish this season and his fifth top-five finish of 2016-17. With 11 career top-five finishes, he is now tied for first in school history in that category with Neil O’Briain.
Novak, who led the field of 128 golfers with 18 birdies, dropped his seasonal stroke average to a league-best 70.25 on the year.
Chattanooga tied for third and Wofford finished fifth in the 21-team field, which featured No. 17 Clemson and four top-100 Division I golfers, including Novak, ranked 60th.
The Mocs are back in action at the Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Mississippi, on Monday and Tuesday. Wofford hosts the Wofford Invitational at The Country Club of Spartanburg on Monday and Tuesday.
Also nominated: Bryce Howell (Furman), Garrett Moores (Samford), Jackson Bishop (Western Carolina).
