RICHMOND, Va. – The UNCG men’s golf team sits in eighth place after one round of the rain-shortened VCU Janney Invitational at The Country Club of Virginia, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek Course on Monday.
Rain caused a five-hour delay Monday and forced the scheduled 54-hole event to become a two-day, 36-hole event. The second and final round will be played Tuesday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start with UNCG set to tee off from holes No. 7-10.
The Spartans posted a 2-over-par 290 in the first round and sits alone in eighth place. Virginia Tech holds the team lead with a 12-under-par 276, while James Madison is second at 9-under-par 279 and East Carolina is third at 7-under-par 281. JMU’s Ryan Cole holds the individual lead with a 6-under 66, while four other golfers are tied for second at 5-under 67.
Junior Joseph Cansler made his UNCG debut Monday and posted the Spartans’ low round for the day at 3-under 69 to sit in a tie for eighth place overall. Cansler recorded six birdies, three bogeys and nine pars on the round. His six birdies were tied for second-most of any golfer in the first round.
Senior Jake McGlone and junior Josh Stockwell are tied for 24th overall with even-par 72s. McGlone recorded three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores, while Stockwell added two birdies, two bogeys and 14 par scores.
Freshman Jonathan Brightwell also made his collegiate debut and posted a 5-over 77 to sit in a tie for 57th overall. Sophomore Bryce Hendrix rounded out the lineup with an 8-over 80, while classmate Mark Johnston posted a 5-over 77 as an individual.
This marks the eighth straight year that UNCG has been part of the VCU Janney Invitational. Joining the Spartans in the 14-team field are host VCU, Richmond, Boston College, West Virginia, Charlotte, George Washington, Virginia Tech, Maryland, East Carolina, James Madison, Old Dominion, Iowa State and Radford.
