Wofford finishes third; Novak, Grab finish 1-2

MADISON, Wis. – The Wofford men’s golf team opened the 2016-17 season by competing in the Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course. Andrew Novak finished first and Jeremy Grab was second, while the team was third overall.

Novak, a senior from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, shot a 69-69-70=208 to go -8 in the tournament. In Monday’s final round, he had birdies on holes 16 and 17 to secure the victory. Novak had only six bogeys in the 54 holes along with 12 birdies and an eagle. Grab, a senior from Charleston, South Carolina, was -7 in the three rounds, going 69-68-72=209 to place second overall. He had 14 birdies and seven bogeys. They held off Michael Colgate (Nebraska) and Jeremy Gandon (Kansas State), who were tied for third at -6.

The performance of Novak and Grab enabled the team to take third place with a total score of 869 (+5) for the three rounds. Also competing for the Terriers were senior Cam Andrade (+15), junior Evan Grenus (+16) and junior Drake Cassidy (+17).

Iowa State won the team title at -12 and it was followed by Nevada at -2. Wofford was third at +5, with Illinois State, Marquette and Wisconsin tied for fourth at +6.

In its eighth year, the tournament featured a 54-hole stroke play format on the par-72, 7,259-yard course. In addition to host Wisconsin, competing teams include Marquette, Rutgers, Illinois State, Wofford, Nebraska, Iowa State, Butler, Drake, South Dakota State, Kansas State, North Dakota State and Nevada. Additionally, Wisconsin, Marquette and Iowa State had golfers competing individually.

The Terriers will take the next couple of weeks off until returning to action on Oct. 3-4 at the Wolfpack Fall Open in Raleigh, North Carolina.
