UNCG 10th at Puerto Rico Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore men’s golfer Josh Stockwell sits in sixth place, two shots out of the lead after day one of the Puerto Rico Collegiate hosted by Purdue at the Rio-Mar River Golf Course in San Juan. Stockwell’s play helped the Spartans sit in 10th place in the prestigious event after 18 holes.

The three-day, 54-hole event continues with round two Monday with 8 a.m. tee times on holes No. 12-15. Live scoring of all three rounds will be available at www.birdiefire.com.

The 15-team field includes nine teams ranked in the top 30 and all teams are ranked in the top 100 by Golf Stat. Joining the 62nd-ranked Spartans in the field include No. 9 Georgia, No. 11 Clemson, No. 13 Oklahoma, No. 14 Purdue, No. 15 Alabama, No 21 North Carolina, No. 22 Kentucky, No. 29 Georgia Tech, No. 32 NC State, No. 50 Michigan, No. 56 Northwestern, No. 80 Maryland, No. 84 Virginia Tech and No. 95 Minnesota.

Stockwell posted a 3-under-par 69 in the first day of play to sit in a tie for sixth place. He trails leader Jonathan Hardee of Alabama by two shots as Hardee posted a 5-under-par 67. Stockwell tallied four birdies and just one bogey on the day to go along with 13 par scores.

His play helped the Spartans finish 10th overall in the field with a 3-over par 291 score. No. 15 Alabama led the way with a 12-under par 276 while No. 21 North Carolina is second at 10-under par 278.

Senior Luke Haithcock also had a strong showing Sunday as he is tied for first in the 13-person Puerto Rico Individual challenge held on the Ocean Course. Haithcock tallied a 2-under-par 69 on the par-71 course as he tallied 11 pars, three birdies and an eagle-3 on the par five No. 5.

Senior Taylor Coalson is 39th overall in the main field after posting a 1-over par 73. Coalson carded four birdies on the day. Junior Jake McGlone is tied for 46th overall with a 2-over-par 74 as he posted two birdies on the day.

Junior Riley Davis finished with a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 53rd overall. Davis tallied five birdies on his up-and-down afternoon. Freshmen Bryce Hendrix rounded out the lineup with a 7-over-par 79.
