Catamounts finish 12th at David Toms Invite

BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior transfer Dylan MacQueen fired a final-round score of 5-over-par 77, finishing the weekend with a 54-hole score of 223 to pace the Western Carolina men’s golf team and placing amidst a tie for 13th overall at the David Toms Intercollegiate. The Catamounts (296-318-313=927) slipped to 12th on the final day of competition at the par-72, 7,220-yard University Club.

It is the third straight tournament that MacQueen, who transferred to WCU from Cardinal Stritch prior to the start of the fall semester, has led the Catamount scoring five. On Sunday, the Woodstock, Ontario, native countered a pair of double-bogeys and five bogeys with four birdies for the final-round 77, sliding seven spots in the final standings.

MacQueen led the Catamounts with 11 birdies over the 54-hole tournament, while also ranking tied for third in par-4 scoring at 2-over (4.07).

Junior Jackson Bishop jumped three spots in the final standings with a final-round score of 6-over-par 78, finishing tied with sophomore teammate Mark David Johnson at 44th overall. The two both shot 235 on the weekend. Bishop finished the event tied for fifth in par-5 scoring at 5-under (4.58), including an eagle.

Sophomore Lawson King was the biggest mover on the day for the Catamounts, advancing six spots in the final standings by matching his opening-round score of 5-over-par 77 on Sunday.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five was sophomore Bradley Durand in a tie for 70th with a three-round score of 248.

Tournament host LSU claimed the overall team championship by 35 strokes over runner-up North Texas. The Tigers posted a final-round 282 for a 54-hole total of 853, while the Mean Green finished with a weekend total of 888.

Four Tigers shared the individual medalist honors with identical scores of 1-under-par 215. LSU’s Brandon Pierce, Eric Ricard, Luis Gagne and Sam Burns all finished atop the individual leader board.

Western Carolina returns to action next weekend at the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by former Southern Conference member Elon at the Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C. The three-round event will be spread over two days with 36 holes of competition on Monday, Oct. 17, with the third and final round on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
