BURLINGTON, Iowa – Freshman Connor Bruns (+4) fired a second-round 71 to lead the Furman men’s golf team Saturday in the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par-72, 7,223-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Furman (+28) is in 15th place following two rounds.

Bruns started on No. 10 and made the turn at 1-under then birdied the par-5 No. 2 and added a birdie on No. 5 to finish the day 1-under-par. Bruns enters Sunday’s final round tied for 40th. Senior Wehman Hopke (+6) birdied No. 15 and No. 18 to tie for 50th with a second-round 74, while seniors Preston Cole and junior Bryce Howell each carded a 75 on Sunday and will start the final round tied for 59th. Cole birdied No. 10 and No. 12 then finished the round with a birdie on No. 9.

Senior Preston Heyward eagled the par-5 No. 4 and scored three consecutive birdies on No. 18 and Nos. 1 and 2 at the turn, concluding the day in 64th place.

Iowa (-19) surged into the lead with a 15-under 273 on Saturday. NC State (-12) dropped into second place, followed by Kansas State (-7) in third.

The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday.
