UNCG finishes 11th at Rod Myers Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. –UNCG men’s golf junior Jake McGlone finished tied for fifth overall to lead the Spartans to an 11th-place finish at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted at the Duke University Club this weekend.
The Spartans return to the course Sept. 21-22 at the Janney VCU Shootout held at the Hermitage Country Club.
The Spartans finished 11th overall with a 31-over-par 895 with a lineup that includes three true freshmen. UNCG began play with a 293 score in round one before dropping to back-to-back 301 scores in rounds two and three. Wake Forest won the event at 2-under par 862 (288-279-295), while tournament host Duke was one shot back at 1-under 863 (286-282-285). Wake Forest’s Will Zalatons won the individual title by one stroke at 8-under-par 208 with rounds of 66-66-76.
McGlone finished 2-under par 214 after opening the tournament with a career-best 5-under-par 67 in round one. He followed that up with a 3-over-par 75 in round two before carding an even-par 72 Sunday.
Freshman Bryce Hendrix made his collegiate debut and finished in a tie for 36th overall, moving up seven spots on the final day. Hendrix finished at 10-over par 226.
Senior Taylor Coalson finished tied for 42nd overall with a 12-over par 228. Freshman James Mishoe finished in a tie for 47th overall at 13-over par 229. Classmate Mark Johnston finished the weekend in a tie for 73rd place with a 32-over par 248.
Chattanooga finishes 12th at Carpet Capital Collegiate
ROCKY FACE, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team tied Ole Miss for 12th place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at the Farm. The Mocs and Rebels shot 913 over the 54 holes, ending up eight clear of North Florida in 14th and six shy of South Florida in 11th.
Wes Gosselin ended up sixth with an even-par 216. That was four strokes off the pace set by medalist Jacob Joiner from Georgia Tech, who won by a shot at -4.
Gosselin’s final-round 71 paced the Mocs’ 302 effort. Brooks Thomas turned in a 75 with Lake Johnson and Stuart Thomas completing the counting cards with 77 and 79, respectively. Kory Webb had the drop score with an 83.
Brooks Thomas tied for 34th overall, shooting 227. Johnson tallied 237 in his first collegiate tournament, while Webb was next on the Mocs roster at 243. Stuart Thomas ended up at 245.
Auburn ran away with the team title with a final round 287 (-1). The Tigers topped runner-up Clemson by nine, while South Carolina was another three strokes belt back in third.
The Mocs return to the tee in just over a week at the Janney VCU Shootout. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is Sept. 21-22 at the Country Club of Virginia on its Tuckhoe Creek Course in Richmond.
ETSU in sixth at Gopher Invitational
INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Senior Adrian Meronk paced the 28th-ranked ETSU men’s golf team as the Buccaneers wrapped up day one of the Gopher Invitational on Sunday evening at Windsong Farm Golf Club. Second-round play was suspended due to darkness with Oklahoma, California and tournament host Minnesota still on the course.
As a team, the Buccaneers ended the day tied for sixth at 23-over-par 591 (293-298).
Meronk is tied for 11th after posting a 2-over-par 144 in the first two rounds of ETSU’s season-opening tournament. The Buccaneer All-American, who registered six birdies on the day, carded an even-par 71 in round one before finishing with a 2-over 73 in the afternoon.
Fellow ETSU senior Gudmundur Kristjansson – who represented the Blue and Gold in the 2015 NCAA Championship – is tied for 16th at 5-over-par 147, while junior Mateusz Gradecki is tied for 28th at 7-over-par 149. Like Meronk, Kristjansson was in the top-10 following the first 18 holes, as he also carded an even-par 71 in round one, but the Icelander was plus-6 through the first three holes in round two and finished at 5-over-par 76. Meanwhile, Gradecki regrouped after his opening round score of 6-over 77, as he jumped 26 spots up the leaderboard following a 1-over 72 in the nightcap.
Other ETSU scores included senior Chris Hickman’s 10-over-par 152 (75-77) and redshirt freshman Conor Rodrigues’ 12-over-par 154 (76-78). Rodrigues is playing in his first-ever collegiate tournament.
Oklahoma, California and Minnesota will wrap up second round play Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. EDT, while the final round will get underway around 9:15 a.m., with a shotgun start.
