ROCKY FACE, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is in 13th place after 18 holes of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at the Farm. Chattanooga shot 305 and is two strokes ahead of North Florida in 14th and one behind Florida in 12th.
Junior Wes Gosselin got the day started right with three straight birdies. He stayed at -3 through his first eight holes before a double-bogey right before the turn. He balanced a birdie and bogey with seven pars on his way in for his 71.
Brooks Thomas was -1 through eight, but his ninth hole (No. 18) was a treacherous one. A bad break on the lightning-quick green with a false front led to an 8. He bounced right back with a birdie on one, nailing an 18-footer. Bogeys at four and seven completed his card with a 76 (+4).
Lake Johnson played well in his first collegiate start. He was -1 through seven holes before a triple-bogey 7. He responded quickly with a birdie before the turn to get back to +1. He was +3 through 17 when he found the hazard on the par-5 ninth. That led to another triple and a 78 (+6).
Kory Webb overcame a rough start. He was +4 through the first five holes and made the turn at +6. Back-to-back birdies and two and three righted the ship before bogeys and five, six, seven and eight. He finished with an 80 to round out the counting scores.
Stuart Thomas leads off Saturday’s second round at 8:52 a.m. Chattanooga is paired with North Florida and Dalton State, coached by former Moc Ben Rickett. Webb (9:03), Johnson (9:14), B. Thomas (9:25) and Gosselin (9:36) follow. Admission is free with the Farm located about 30 minutes from downtown Chattanooga.
