ETSU duo advances to match play at British Amateur

ANGUS, Scotland – ETSU’s Gudmundur Kristjansson and Mateusz Gradecki both advanced to match play at the 120th British Amateur Championship from Carnoustie and Panmure in Angus, Scotland.

Following 36 holes of stroke play, which was contested at both courses on Monday and Tuesday, Kristjansson finished tied for third at 5-under-par 137, while Gradecki was one of 12 golfers tied for 20th at 1-under-par 141.

Kristjansson, who totaled nine birdies, 23 pars and four bogeys in the two rounds, began play with a 1-under 71 on Monday at Carnoustie before climbing up the leaderboard with a 4-under 66 on Tuesday at Panmure. Five of Kristjansson’s nine birdies came in the second round as he posted back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 and did the same on Nos. 9 and 10.

Gradecki, like his Buccaneer counterpart, also put together a strong round on Tuesday to move up the board. After posting a 4-over 76 Monday at Carnoustie, Gradecki bagged six birdies in round two at Panmure en route to firing a 5-under 65, moving him into match play.

Scotland’s Craig Howie and New Zealand’s Ryan Chisnall were tied atop the leaderboard following stroke play at 7-under-par 135.

The top 64 golfers moved into match play with the cutline being set at 1-over-par 143.

The tournament now moves to match play to determine the champion over the final four days at Carnoustie. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes, except the final round, which will be 36 holes of play.

Gradecki faces Germany’s Alexander Matlari in round one of match play Wednesday at 7:20 a.m. EDT, while Kristjansson tees off 10 minutes later against Denmark’s Christoffer Bring. Matlari, who recorded a 1-over-par 143 in stroke play, just wrapped up his sophomore year at Duke, while Bring is ranked 56th in the European Golf Rankings. Bring also shot a 1-over-par 143 in the two rounds of stoke play.

Prior to Tuesday’s cut, the field consisted of 288 golfers from 30 different countries, while more than 30 players are ranked in the top 100 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings. The Amateur champion earns a spot in the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews and the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Traditionally, an invitation is also extended to the winner to play in the Masters.

Several Open champions and Ryder Cup players have played in the Amateur, including Jack Nicklaus, José Maria Olazábal, Colin Montgomerie, Sir Nick Faldo, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia, who won in 1998.
