WCU?s Poston Named SoCon Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina senior J.T. Poston has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from April 8-14. The selection is made by the league office and is the final one of the 2015 season.

Poston shot a 10-under 206 at the three-round, two-day Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg, finishing second in the 75-golfer field and helping the Catamounts to a fourth-place showing among the participating 14 teams.

The Hickory, N.C., native opened with consecutive rounds of 3-under 69 on Monday before closing out his outstanding weekend with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday to tie the fourth-best score in school history. Poston finished just one shot back of champion Justin Pagila of Army West Point, who shot a 5-under 67 Tuesday.

The top-10 finish was Poston’s eighth in 2014-15 and the 28th of his career.

Poston’s weekly award was his third of the season (Feb. 25, April 1), matching the SoCon record reached three other times, most recently by Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes in 2014. Poston’s honor was the fourth of his career, leaving him one shy of matching that SoCon record. He is just the fourth golfer in league history to win the award four times or more.

Western Carolina and the rest of the league are back in action at the Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship on Sunday, April 19, through Tuesday, April 21. The tournament will be held in Pinehurst, N.C., on Pinehurst No. 9.

Also nominated: Gudmundur Kristjansson (ETSU), Wehman Hopke (Furman), Roy Dixon (UNCG) and Brannan Hudson (Wofford).
