UNCG 11th at Irish Creek

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team played 36 holes Saturday afternoon at The Club at Irish Creek and the Spartans are in 11th place overall after day one of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Davidson. The third and final round will be held Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with the Spartans set to tee off from holes Nos. 10-12. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.

The Spartans posted a 16-over par 584 (290-294) in the first day and are just six shots out of fifth place overall. North Florida leads the field with a 7-under-par 561 (284-277) and only three teams total are under par on the par-71 course. Frederick Nilehn of Kennesaw State holds the individual lead with an 8-under-par 134 (66-68), holding a two-stroke lead over his nearest competitor.

Junior Taylor Coalson is the Spartans’ top finisher after the first two rounds as he sits in a tie for 19th place overall. Coalson carded a 1-over-par 143 Saturday as he opened with a 1-under-par 70 in round one and a 2-over-par 73 in round two. He tallied four birdies and three bogeys in round one while his round-two highlight was an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 15.

Freshman Josh Stockwell and senior Roy Dixon are tied for 35th overall with 4-over 146 scores. Stockwell posted back-to-back rounds of 2-over-par 73 as he tallied three birdies on the afternoon. Dixon opened with a 1-over-par 72 in round one before a 3-over-par 74 in round two with six total birdies on the day.

Sophomore Jake McGlone is in a tie for 67th overall with a 10-over-par 152 (78-74), while junior Luke Haithcock is tied for 70th overall with an 11-over-par 153 (75-78).

The Irish Creek field this season features 14 teams, including eight that are ranked in the top 100 of the latest Golfstat rankings. Joining the No. 75 Spartans in the field are: No. 17 South Florida, No. 24 North Florida, No. 26 Kennesaw State, No. 52 Charlotte, No. 64 Georgia State, No. 66 East Carolina, No. 67 McNeese State, Akron, Appalachian State, Davidson, UNCW, Richmond and Tulsa.
