WCU?s Poston Named SoCon Men's Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 25-31. The selection is made by the league office.

Poston turned in a three-day total of 6-under-par 210 at the Furman Intercollegiate over the weekend, finishing third in a 114-player field that featured five other ranked individuals. Poston, ranked 36th nationally, finished ahead of all of them.

The senior from Hickory, N.C., opened with a 3-under 69 on Friday to sit tied for third and followed that up with a season-low 5-under 67 Saturday to take the 36-hole lead heading into final-round play. He posted a 2-over 74 Sunday to finish alone in third for his fifth top-five finish of the season.

Poston, the reigning SoCon Player of the Year, helped the Catamounts to a seventh-place team finish, the best of the five SoCon squads in the 18-team field. Three teams in the field were ranked in the top 50, including No. 31 Virginia Tech, which finished a shot behind Western Carolina.

The weekly award is Poston’s second of the season (Feb. 25) and third of his career (March 12, 2014).

Western Carolina returns to action at the Gary Koch Invitational in Gastonia, N.C., on April 6-7.

Also nominated: Wehman Hopke (Furman), Garrett Moores (Samford), Wes Gosselin (Chattanooga) and Jeremy Grab (Wofford).
