Mercer?s Rule Named SoCon Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer senior Trey Rule has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 18-24. The selection is made by the league office.

Rule tied for fourth out of 84 competitors at the Linger Longer Invitational in Eatonton, Ga., over the weekend, helping the Bears to a sixth-place finish in a 15-team field that included seven squads ranked in the top 35 nationally. Rule, playing in his hometown, posted a stroke average of 69.3 over the three rounds, finishing with a season-best score of 8-under-par 208 to tie teammate Emmanuel Kountakis.

All three of Rule’s rounds were under par, as he opened with a 1-under 71 in Saturday’s first round before storming to a season-best 6-under 66 in the day’s second circuit. He closed the tournament with another 71 Sunday to secure his second straight top-10 performance.

All told, Rule posted 13 birdies and an eagle for the tournament and bested 14 players ranked in the top 100 nationally. The three players that finished ahead of him were all ranked in the top 30.

Mercer returns to action at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., on April 3-5.

Also nominated: Roy Dixon (UNCG) and Wes Gosselin (Chattanooga).
