Chattanooga leads Davidson Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs got the spring campaign off to a solid start with an even-par 288 to take the lead at the Davidson College Invitational. It was a balanced effort as the four counters turned in level-par 72s.
The foursome of Liam Johnston, Wes Gosselin, Andrew Weathers and Kory Webb shot even-par 72s, tying for sixth through 18 holes. They combined to tally 14 birdies on the day. Ewan Scott is tied for 25th with the drop score with a 74. Brooks Thomas turned in a 75 playing as an individual and is tied for 32nd.
The Mocs lead Charlotte by one and third-place Wofford by six. The 49ers Victor Wiggins is the individual leader at -2 (70). There are four tied for second at -1, just a stroke ahead of Chattanooga’s quartet at E.
Chattanooga’s final round starts on the first hole paired with Charlotte and Wofford. Scott leads off with Webb (10:09), Weathers (10:18), Gosselin (10:27) and Liam Johnston (10:36) close behind.
Wofford third at Davidson Invite
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wofford men’s golf team carded an opening-round 6-over-par 294 and sits third at the Davidson College Invitational, which teed off Monday at River Run Country Club.
The Terriers are six shots back of 49th-ranked Chattanooga. The Mocs lead the 12-team at even-par 288 and Charlotte is just one stroke back in second.
Sophomore Jeremy Grab and senior Cory Taylor lead Wofford through the first round. Both are tied for 13th of 71 competitors after a first-round 1-over-par 71. Both sank two birdies in their opening 18.
A shot back of Grab and Taylor are senior Brannan Hudson and sophomore Andrew Novak at 2-over-par. Novak had a pair of birdies on his round, as well, while Hudson drained three birdies to go with three bogeys and a double. Hudson, who started on the 12th, was 4-over through five holes and played his final 13 holes at 2-under.
Just four strokes separate to top 31 golfers. Charlotte’s Victor Wiggins is in alone in first after posting a 2-under-par 70.
The final round of the Davidson College Invitational gets underway Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes but shortened to 36 after a recent snowstorm affected the golf course. The Terriers will tee off in the final five groups off No. 1, between 10-10:36 a.m.
