Furman finishes 13th at The Hayt Collegiate Invitational

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Junior Preston Cole fired a 69 Sunday to finish in a tie for 25th place to lead the Furman men’s golf team final round of the The Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the par-72, 6,976-yard Sawgrass Country Club.

Cole (+9) carded seven birdies on the day, including four out of five holes from No. 7 to No. 11 and three consecutive birdies on No. 14, 15, and 16, to finish the day 13 strokes back of No. 28 Beau Hossler (-4), who carded a 70 on Sunday to garner individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 76-66-70=212.

Sophomore Bryce Howell (+12) carded a 74 with a birdie on No. 6 on Sunday to tie for 37th place, while junior Wehman Hopke (+14) recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 and an additional birdie on No. 15 to finish the day with a 75, tying for 45th place. 

Senior Michael Borton (+31) birdied No. 8 and tied for 82nd, while redshirt freshman Alex Taylor (+37) scored consecutive birdies on No. 7 and 8 to tie for 85th.

No. 8 Texas (+8) won the tournament by six strokes over No. 29 North Florida (+14), while No. 26 Oklahoma State (+19), No. 16 UCLA (+21) and No. 18 Alabama (+29) rounded out the top five. The Paladins (+60) finished the tournament in 13th place.

Furman will compete at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C., March 9-10.
