WCU?s Poston Named Men?s Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina senior J.T. Poston has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition this spring through Feb. 24. The selection is made by the league office.

Poston, the reigning SoCon Player of the Year and SoCon Championship medalist, won his opening tournament of the spring on Tuesday, claiming the weather-shortened Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The Hickory, N.C., native shot a two-round score of 142 (71.0 stroke average) to pace the 95-golfer field and help the Catamounts to a 10th-place team finish among the 19 teams competing. Poston opened play with a 3-under 69 in the first round Monday and was even-par through 15 holes of his second round when it was cut short by darkness. When play resumed Tuesday, he completed his 1-over 73 for the second round, while the third round was canceled by inclement weather.

Poston, who entered the tournament ranked No. 79 nationally in the GolfStat rankings, bested four other top-100 golfers. After the win, Poston jumped to No. 60 nationally.

The weekly honor is the second of Poston’s career. He also earned the award on March 12, 2014.

Western Carolina is back in action at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C., on March 9-10.

Also nominated: Wehman Hopke (Furman), Taylor Coalson (UNCG) and Andrew Novak (Wofford).
