UNCG tops High Point in Carolinas Cup
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team opened the spring season Saturday with its annual match play event and the Spartans dominated play against Triad rival High Point, posting an 8.5-1.5 victory at Grandover Resort. The teams played seven individual matches and three best-ball matches.
The Spartans won six individual matches and squared one while winning two out of three best-ball matches. Sophomore Jake McGlone had the biggest win of the after as he won 8&6 over AJ Hopkins. Senior Alex Ehlert won his match 6&4 over McKay Tye, while junior Luke Haithcock won his match 5&4.
Freshman Josh Stockwell also won his match 5&4 against LJ Georgetti, while redshirt sophomore William Thomas won 3&2 over Tommy Dillion. Junior Taylor Coalson closed out the individual victories with a 3&1 win over Jack Sides, while senior Roy Dixon picked up a half a point by squaring Pureun Kim.
In the best-ball matches, Stockwell and Ehlert won their contest 6&5, while Coalson and McGlone won their match 7&5. High Point picked up its only victory by taking down the duo of Haithcock and Dixon 3&1.
The Spartans return to action Feb. 22-24 as they travel to the Puerto Rico Collegiate at Rio-Mar River Golf Course in their first stroke-play event of the spring.
Mercer 11th at SunTrust Gator Invite
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Mercer University men’s golf team ended the opening day of the SunTrust Gator Invitational in 11th place, finishing with a two-round score of 594.
The Bears, who are competing in a loaded field that includes 12 Golfweek.com Top 100 teams and three Top 25 programs, recorded a score of 299 in the opening round before carding a 295 to close out the day.
Defending SunTrust Gator Invitational medalist Trey Rule led the way for the Bears, posting scores of 72 and 75 en route to 32nd place. Emmanuel Kountakis finished one stroke behind with a two-round total of 149 on the strength of five birdies.
Freshman Jerry Ren carded scores of 73 and 77 on his way to a total score of 150, while Jeffrey Heinicka Jr. rounded the scoring with Saturday’s total of 152, including a team-best 1-over round of 71 to wrap up the day.
Mercer will close out the spring’s opening event Sunday, as the action is set to tee off at 8:50 a.m.
