Samford wraps competition at Savannah Quarters Individual Intercollegiate
POOLER, Ga. – The Samford University men's golf team began play in its 2015 spring schedule this week at the pristine Savannah Quarters Country Club as the Bulldogs shook off their rust with a solid all-around performance at the Savannah Quarters Individual Intercollegiate, which was held Monday and Tuesday.
In this week's individual tournament that featured 51 competitors from 13 universities, Samford's Chris Clouser led the way with a three-round total of 232 (72-82-78).
Clouser, the Bulldogs' junior native of Huntsville, Alabama, turned in his best score of the tournament in the first round of play as he carded an even-par 72 on Monday. He finished just four strokes out of the top 25 on Tuesday and two strokes behind Southern Conference rival Justin Connelly of Mercer.
Sophomore Robert Adams fired a 54-hole tally of 235. Adams notched a 1-over-par 73 in the first round Monday and closed out the tournament with an 80 on Tuesday.
Rounding out Samford's scoring were Ivan Truss (79-75-85=239), Mac Hennessy (82-77-84=243), Jake Miller (85-78-84=247) and Garrett Moores (87-83-80=250).
Kennesaw State's Kelby Burton claimed individual medalist honors at the two-day, three-round event Tuesday by finishing the tournament with a 54-hole score of 6-under-par 210 (66-73-71).
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action March 9-10, as the Bulldogs are eager to host their annual Samford Intercollegiate competition to be held at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Alabama.
Mercer completes action at Savannah Quarters
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Mercer University junior Evan Usry paced the Bears' contingent at the Savannah Quarter's Individual Intercollegiate, finishing 16th overall with a three-round score of 224.
Usry shot a career-best 72 in the event's second round after carding a 75 on his first 18 holes. The Evans, Ga., native tallied a score of 77 on Tuesday's final round to close out the tournament just four strokes out of 10th place.
Justin Connelly finished 32nd overall with a total score of 230, matching a career-best with his second-round total of 73. Jim Beatty rounded out the Bears' trio at the event, carding a 266 for a 51st-place finish.
Mercer opens its spring championship season this weekend, as it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
