UNCG ties for second at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf moved up three spots to finish in a tie for second place overall at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon as the Spartans finished just two shots out of the team lead at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club.

The second-place finish is the top finish of the season for the Spartans. The Spartans placed four golfers in the top 18 of the individual standings in the in the weather-shortened, 36-hole event.

The Spartans moved up the leaderboard by posting their lowest round of the year at 2-under-par 282, the second-lowest round of the event by any team. UNCG finished tied with tournament host NC State at 7-over-par 575, trailing only Augusta, which posted a 5-over-par 573 (297-276).

Robin Petersson of Augusta won the individual title with a 6-under par 136 as he posted back-to-back rounds of 68, winning by three strokes.

Senior Taylor Coalson and freshman James Mishoe led the Spartans, as they were tied for eighth overall at 1-over-par 143. Coalson finished the week climbing seven spots in the standings Tuesday, as he carded rounds of 73 and 70. His eighth-place finish marked the third time in his career he has finished in the top 10 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.

Mishoe tallied his top finish of his young career with the eighth-place showing. He carded rounds of 72 and 71 to finish 1-over-par 143.

Sophomore Josh Stockwell carded his best finish of the season and his second-best finish of his career as he tied for 13th overall. Stockwell tallied a 2-over-par 144 as he notched scores of 74 in round one and 70 in round two.

Junior Jake McGlone continued his strong play on the year as he finished tied for 18th place, moving up the leaderboard 10 spots in round two. McGlone has posted three straight top-20 finishes this year and four straight dating back to last year. He finished with a 3-over-par 145 as he opened with a 74 in round one before carding an even-par 71 in round two.

Freshman Bryce Hendrix rounded out the Spartans’ lineup as he finished tied for 46th place overall. Hendrix ended the two-round event with an 8-over-par 150, as he opened with a 3-over-par 74 before closing with a 5-over 76.

 

Chattanooga ties for seventh at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team finished tied for seventh at the Wolfpack Fall Open on Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The Mocs shot 294 over the final 18 to end up knotted with Loyola (Md.) at 586.

Wes Gosselin posted his first top-five finish of the season, and second top-10, carding level-par 142. His back-to-back 71s marked a new 36-hole career low total. He tied for fifth, six strokes behind medalist Robin Petersson (136) of Augusta.

Chattanooga was even-par on its round Tuesday through nine holes. The 10th-12th were treacherous, with the squad shooting +7 over the stretch, ending up at +10 for the day.

Brooks Thomas bounced back with the Mocs’ low round of the tournament turning in a 1-under 70 Tuesday. That tied him for 46th with Stuart Thomas at 150. Andrew Weathers and Lake Johnson were another shot back at 151.

Kory Webb had a strong effort as an individual. His career-best 36-hole total of 146 (+5) tied for 23rd overall, with the junior shooting 1-over 72 in the final 18.

The Mocs return to the tee next week at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate. The event is played at Berkeley Hills Country Club outside Atlanta.

 

Western Carolina finishes 11th at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. – For a second-time this season, and coming in just his second tournament of the semester, Western Carolina senior Tyler Lail recorded a career-best finish on Tuesday, finishing tied for second at the weather-shortened Wolfpack Intercollegiate, which concluded at the par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.

Lail carded a career-low round on Monday with a 2-under-par 69 and followed it up by shooting 1-under 70 on Tuesday, which matched his previous career-best 18 hole score. He finished just three strokes in arrears of the individual medalist, first-round leader Robin Petersson from Augusta, who posted back-to-back rounds of 68 for a two-day score of 136.

Western Carolina advanced two spots in the final standings collectively as a team, shooting a season-low team round of 296 on Tuesday to finish 11th in the 16-team field with a score of 597.

Sophomore Jackson Bishop climbed into the top 10 early in the round on Tuesday before finishing tied for 30th overall with a two-day score of 147. Bishop followed up his first-round 3-over-par 74 with a 2-over round of 73.

True freshman Mark David Johnson finished a stroke better in the second round with a 4-over 75 for a two-day score of 151 in a tie for 53rd, while sophomore Bright Julamool was four strokes better on Tuesday at 7-over 78 and a final tally of 160, tied for 86th. Senior Taylor Durand finished 91st overall, shooting 167 (86-81).

Western Carolina returns to action Oct. 19-20 at the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Elon University at the Alamance Country Club. The 54-hole event will be spread over two days with 36 holes on Monday and 18 the following day.

 

Wofford finishes 14th at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wofford men’s golf team finished the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in 14th place on Tuesday at Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the campus of NC State.

The Terriers slid six spots from their eighth-place positioning after Monday’s first round by carding a 20-over-par 304 in Tuesday’s final round.

Junior Jeremy Grab led Wofford’s effort, earning a top-30 in the 91-player field. Grab was inside the top five through 10 holes after his fourth birdie of the day on the par-4 10th but played the final eight holes at 5-over. He finished tied for 30th with a tournament total of 5-over-par 147.

Andrew Novak had Wofford’s best round of the day. The junior was good for three birdies on his way to a 3-over 74. Novak tied for 46th at 8-over-par 150.

Senior Grant Waggoner (+10), sophomore Evan Grenus (+10) and junior Cam Andrade (+12) rounded out Wofford’s team competitors. Waggoner and Grenus shared 60th, while Andrade came in 66th.

The Terriers compete again next Monday and Tuesday at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by Appalachian State at Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
