Wofford fourth at Donald Ross Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Junior Jeremy Grab used rounds of 1-under 69 and 1-over 71 to lead the Wofford men’s golf team on day one of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate. The tournament teed off Monday morning is being hosted by Appalachian State at Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club, playing as a par-70 at 6,718 yards.
Grab posted three birdies in each of the first two rounds to sit at even-par. The Bishop England product out of Charleston, S.C., is tied for 10th in the 77-man field, four shots back of tournament leader Franck Medale (-4) of Jacksonville heading into Tuesday’s final round.
The Terriers posted back-to-back team scores of 7-over-par 287 to sit at 14-over through two rounds. They are in fourth place, 14 shots behind leader Jacksonville (E). Appalachian State (+3) is in second and Gardner-Webb (+8) is third.
Junior Andrew Novak and sophomore Evan Grenus are each 4-over-par for the tournament and tied for 23rd. Grenus tied Grab for Wofford’s low round of the day, sinking six birdies for his 69 in round two.
Junior Cam Andrade (+8) is 43rd and senior Grant Waggoner (+12) is 62nd.
The Terriers wrap up the tournament Tuesday, teeing off at 9:10 a.m.
UNCG fourth at Auto Trader Collegiate
DULUTH, Ga. –UNCG senior men’s golfer Taylor Coalson sits in a tie for second place after 36 holes Monday at the fifth annual Auto Trader Collegiate. Coalson’s play led the Spartans to a fourth-place showing after day one at the Berkeley Hills Country Club.
The third and final round will be played Tuesday with the Spartans set for tee times between 9:05-9:45 a.m. from hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
Coalson posted a 5-under-par 139 through two rounds Monday. He is tied for second place overall, trailing Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb, who carded a 12-under-par 132 (65-67). Coalson opened his round with a season-low 3-under par 69 before following that up with a 2-under par 70 in round two. He posted 27 pars and seven birdies on his two rounds.
The Spartans, who are defending champions of the Auto Trader Collegiate, sit in fourth place overall with a 3-under-par 573. UNCG opened with a season-low 282 in round one before carding a 291 in round two. The Spartans trail Lipscomb (23-under-par 553), South Florida (13-under-par 563) and Troy (4-under-par 572).
Sophomore Josh Stockwell finished the 36 holes tied for 14th place overall at 1-under-par 143. Stockwell opened his day in impressive fashion, carding a 4-under-par 68, his lowest career round.
Junior Jake McGlone was steady on the day, posting a 1-over-par 145 to finish in a tie for 22nd overall. McGlone opened the day with a 1-over-par 73 before rallying for an even-par 72 in the second round.
Freshman Bryce Hendrix opened his tournament with a career-low even-par 72 in round one before posting a 4-over-par 76 in round two. Hendrix sits in a tie for 42nd place overall with a 4-over-par 148. Classmate James Mishoe rounds out the Spartans’ lineup tied for 52nd overall with a 6-over-par 150 (76-74).
The Spartans took two individuals to the event in Duluth. Senior Luke Haithcock and freshman Mark Johnston are tied for 52nd overall at 6-over par 150. Both golfers carded rounds of 74 and 76 on the day.
Chattanooga sixth at Auto Trader Collegiate
DULUTH, Ga. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is in sixth place with 18 holes to play at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate. They were led by sophomore Andrew Weathers, who fired -5 over his 36 holes Monday.
Weathers carded a 70 in the early round and came back with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon for his 139 total. He is seven shots behind the leader Dawson Armstrong at -12.
The Mocs shot 2-over 578 as a team and are two behind Georgia State in fifth at 576 (E) and one ahead of South Alabama in seventh at +3. Lipscomb leads at -23, followed by South Florida at -13.
Brooks Thomas is tied for 14th, four behind Weathers at -1. Wes Gosselin is at +3 after rounds of 75 and 72, while Stuart Thomas stands at +5. Kory Webb (159) and Lake Johnson (160) rounded out the scoring for the day, with Johnson playing as an individual.
The final round starts at 8:15 a.m. for the Mocs, paired with Georgia State, South Alabama and Francis Marion. Webb leads off No. 1 tee followed by Stuart Thomas (8:25), Gosselin (8:35), Brooks Thomas (8:45) and Weathers (8:55).
Mercer 13th at Auto Trader Collegiate
DULUTH, Ga. – The Mercer University men's golf team carded a 24-over-par 600 after the first two rounds of Georgia State's AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at the Berkeley Hills Country Club.
Justin Connelly closed the day strong to finish as the Bears' top performer in his first match of the season. The junior shot a 1-over 73 on his second round of the afternoon, including an even-par 36 on his final nine holes en route to a two-round tally of 148.
Mercer shot back-to-back 12-over scores of 300 to end the opening day of action in 13th. The Bears head into Tuesday's round five shots out of 11th in an event that is led by Lipscomb's 36-hole total of 553.
Jeffrey Heinicka carded a 1-over 73 on the back nine thanks to the team's best hole of the day. The senior needed just three shots to find the hole, finishing with his second collegiate eagle on the 500-yard 10th hole.
Mercer totaled 16 birdies through the first two rounds, including a team-leading five from Jerry Ren.
The Bears will wrap up play Tuesday morning with Sean Smothers kicking off the Mercer contingent with a 9 a.m. tee time.
