Wofford wins Rutgers Invitational
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Wofford men’s golf team got the fall season started with a bang, rallying from seven strokes back with a final-round 3-under-par 281 to capture the Rutgers Invitational championship on Saturday at the RU Golf Course.
The Terriers went into the final round in fourth place, seven strokes behind tournament leader and host Rutgers. Led by a pair of 2-under 69s from freshman Evan Grenus and senior Brannan Hudson, Wofford overtook the Scarlet Knights to win its first title of the season by a single stroke, completing the tournament with a 7-over-par 859.
In his first collegiate tournament, Grenus – the 2014 Connecticut State Amateur Champion – led Wofford with a 4-under 209, earning a tie for fourth place. The Glastonbury, Connecticut, native did not card a round over par, shooting an even 71 in round one, followed by back-to-back 69s.
Sophomore Jeremy Grab tied for 11th at 3-over 214, carding a pair of 1-over 72s around a second-round 1-under 70. Senior Cory Taylor tied for 28th in the 95-player field, followed by sophomore Andrew Novak and Hudson tying for 36th at 11-over. Hudson did so despite an opening-round 12-over 83, recovering in round two with a 72 before his final-round 69.
The Terriers will be back in action in two weeks, when they travel to The Wolfpack Intercollegiate, hosted by NC State.
Chattanooga tied for second at Wolf Run Intercollegiate
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is tied for second after 18 holes at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate. The Mocs and Florida Gators each shot 295 over the opening 18 to trail Illinois by 11 at 285 at Wolf Run Golf Club.
Saturday’s docket had a scheduled 36 holes. Afternoon storms sent teams from the course prior to finishing. The remaining holes will be completed Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m., followed immediately by a shotgun start for the final round.
Zac Stolz paced the Mocs over the initial cards. The sophomore shot a 1-over 72 and is tied for ninth. He is a single stroke ahead of Ewan Scott, who is tied for 13th at 73. Liam Johnston and Andrew Weathers turned in matching 75s, while Wes Gosselin had a 76. Brooks Thomas shot 80 playing as an individual.
The Illini’s Brian Campbell and Scott Cahill of Miami (Ohio) lead individually at 1-under 70. There are six in second at even-par, while three more matched Stolz at 72.
