UNCG ties for second at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team turned in the best team score of the third and final round to move up the leaderboard to a second-place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday at the UNC Finley Golf Club. The Spartans were the only team to post an under-par round Sunday, climbing seven spots on the leaderboard for the runner-up finish.
UNCG finished the 54-hole, three-day tournament with a 3-under-par 861 to tie with East Carolina. The Spartans opened the tournament with their highest round of the weekend at 2-over-par 290 Friday before regrouping with a 3-under-par 285 Saturday and a 2-under-par 286 Sunday. Tournament host North Carolina won the event with a 26-under-par 838 (273-277-288) on its home course.
Sophomore Carter Jenkins was the Spartans’ top finisher, posting a ninth-place showing with a 4-under-par 212. The ninth-place showing is his seventh top-10 finish of his career and marks the second straight season he has finished ninth at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate after posting an even-par 216 on the course last season in his collegiate opener.
Jenkins opened the tournament this year with back-to-back rounds of 71 before improving to a 2-under-par 70. He was one of just four golfers this weekend to card three rounds under par as he finished with 14 birdies and 33 par scores during the 54-hole event.
Junior Taylor Coalson finished tied for 23rd on the weekend with a 1-over-par 217, marking his 13th top-25 finish of his career and his best finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate during his career. Coalson opened the weekend with a 1-over-par 73 before carding his best round Saturday with a 2-under-par 70. He finished up the tournament with a 2-over-par 74.
Sophomore Jake McGlone added a 34th-place finish with a 3-over-par 219. McGlone opened the tournament with a tough 6-over-par 78 but battled back with a 3-under-par 69 in round two and an even-par 72 in the final round. He was 3-under-par through 14 holes Sunday but carded a quadruple bogey on No. 15 to go over par. He showed his mettle, though, and answered that tough hole with a birdie on No. 16 to come back to even par.
Senior Roy Dixon carded his best round of the weekend Sunday, posting a 2-under-par 70 to finish 4-over-par 220 on the weekend (75-75-70). Dixon’s final round was the cleanest round of the weekend for the Spartans, as he recorded two birdies and 16 pars.
Freshman Josh Stockwell rounded out the Spartans’ lineup with a 6-over-par 222 in his first career collegiate event. Stockwell opened his UNCG career in style Friday with a 1-under-par 71 before following up with scores of 76 and 75 in rounds two and three, respectively.
North Carolina’s Ben Griffin won the event individually with a 10-under-par 206 (67-69-70), winning by two strokes over Furman’s Bryce Howell (66-73-69) and GRU Augusta’s Maverick Antcliff (70-69-69) at 8-under-par 208.
The Spartans return to the course Sept. 22-23 for the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va., at the Hermitage Country Club.
Howell finishes second, Furman seventh at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Bryce Howell (-5) fired a 69 to tie for second Sunday in the final round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course. The Paladins (+1) claimed seventh place at the tournament.
Howell teed off of No. 1 and birdied three holes on the front to make the turn at 2-under before birdieing No. 13 and No. 18 on the back to finish the round 3-under-par, posting a three-round total of 66-73-69=208. He tied with Maverick Antcliff (-5) of GRU Augusta, and the duo concluded the tournament two strokes behind individual medalist Ben Griffin (-10) of North Carolina who carded a 70 in the tournament’s final round for a 54-hole total of 206.
Paladin junior Preston Cole (+4) birdied No. 6 and No. 13 on Sunday to tie for 38th after carding a final-round 74, while junior Preston Heyward (+5) shot a 73 with a birdie on No. 17 on Sunday to tie for 46th. Freshman Adam Garrett (+6) opened the round with a birdie on No. 1 and birdied No. 13, scoring a 76 in the third round, to tie for 52nd. Senior Michael Borton (+12) eagled the par-5 No. 5 to tie for 78th.
North Carolina (-26) won the tournament by 23 strokes over UNCG (-3) and East Carolina (-3), who tied for second. GRU Augusta (E), Kennesaw State (E), and Elon (E) tied for fourth, edging out the Paladins by one stroke.
Furman will compete at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club in Johnson City, Tenn., Oct. 10-12.
Chattanooga finishes 10th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team finished 10th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Mocs shot 871 over their 54 holes to end up ahead of Charlotte and Mercer in 11th and 12th, respectively.
Wes Gosselin was the top Moc with a 1-under 215 to tie for 19th. The score and finish are the best of his career in a team event. He played 2-under over his final 36 holes at UNC Finley Golf Course.
Two shots behind Gosselin tying for 23rd was Ewan Scott. Scott’s 217 included an opening-round 68. Liam Johnston and Brooks Thomas tied for 46th at plus-5. Thomas matched Gosselin for low round Sunday with a level-par 72. Andrew Weathers was one off Gosselin and Thomas on Sunday, shooting 73 and finishing with a 228.
North Carolina won its tournament with a 26-under total of 838. UNCG and East Carolina tied for second at 861 (-3). The Tar Heels’ Ben Griffin captured medalist honors, shooting 10 under. Furman’s Bryce Howell and GRU Augusta’s Maverick Antcliff tied for second at 8-under.
The Mocs have a little time off before the next event. The squad heads to the Wolf Run Intercollegiate on Sept. 22-23. The tournament, hosted by Indiana, is at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind.
Mercer finishes 12th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Mercer University men’s golf team fired a final-round score of 296 to take home a 12th-place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday at the UNC Finley Course.
The Bears recorded a team total of 876 in the three-day event after carding scores of 287 and 293 on the first two rounds of play. North Carolina took home the team title, while UNCG and East Carolina tied for second place.
Sophomore Emmanuel Kountakis and freshman Jerry Ren ended the tournament in a tie for 23rd place to lead Mercer. Kountakis shot back-to-back 70s to open the weekend before ending with a 77 for a three-round total of 217. Ren wrapped up his first collegiate event with a team-best score of 71 on Sunday, finishing 1-over for the tournament to match Kountakis.
Senior Trey Rule carded a 72 on the final day of play to finish 32nd overall with a total score of 218, while Sean Smothers rounded out the scoring for the Bears with Sunday’s total of 76. Jeffrey Heinicka Jr. posted a 79 in the closing round to finish one stroke ahead of Smothers for the tournament with a score of 227. Evan Usry, who competed as an individual, signed for an 18-hole total of 75 Sunday en route to a final score of 235.
Mercer moves on to the second tournament of its five-event fall schedule, as it travels to Toledo, Ohio, for the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Country Club on Sept. 22-23.
Western Carolina’s Julamool finishes second, WCU ninth at The Invitational at The Ocean Course
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Western Carolina freshman Bright Julamool recorded a runner-up finish to pace the Catamounts in the season-opening event at The Invitational at The Ocean Course held at the Kiawah Island Resort. WCU finished ninth overall in the 14-team field with a three-round total of 892.
Julamool, who led the 81-golfer field after 36 holes, fired a 7-under-par 209 in his debut, including a career-best round of 5-under-par 67 on Saturday to finish second. The Bangkok, Thailand, native led the field in par-4 scoring at 7-under-par (3.77) and was tied for the tournament-high with 16 birdies. Julamool was joined by senior J.T. Poston in a three-way tie for third place as the two led the Catamount side.
Poston fired three rounds under-par with two 70s and a 1-under 71 on Saturday for a three-day total of 211. The Hickory, N.C., product finished tied for first with 38 pars, adding 11 birdies over the 54 holes.
Rounding out Western Carolina’s scoring five was freshman Jackson Bishop in a tie for 57th overall with a score of 235, senior Matthew Turner (241) in a tied for 69th and junior Tyler Lail (246) in a tie for 78th overall.
South Florida led from start to finish to claim the team championship in dominating fashion, finishing 27 strokes ahead of runner-up Georgia State. The Bulls carded a three-day score of 850 (-14) ahead of the Panthers in second at 877 (+13). Georgia Southern finished third at 879, with Troy (882) and Kentucky (883) rounding out the top five.
Chase Koepka of USF edged Julamool by a stroke, carding a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday to shoot 208 to earn individual medalist honors.
Western Carolina returns to action Sept. 29-30 at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Louisville at the Cardinal Golf Course in Simpsonville, Ky. Poston claimed individual medalist honors at last year’s tournament.
