Furman tied for fifth at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Bryce Howell (-5) carded a 73 to finish the second round tied for fourth place overall and lead the Furman men’s golf team Saturday at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.  The Paladins (-3) moved up five spots following Saturday’s play, concluding the round tied for fifth place.

Howell birdied three holes on the front and made the turn at even-par before birdieing No. 13 and No. 17 on the back.  He finished the day three strokes back of leader Ben Griffin (-8) of North Carolina, who holds a two-round total of 138 entering Sunday’s final round.

Paladin junior Preston Cole (+2), senior Michael Borton (+2) and freshman Adam Garrett (+2) all enter Sunday’s final round tied for 43rd place.  Cole birdied the par-4 No. 2 and the par-5 No. 6 to score a 74 on Saturday, while Borton fired a 70 with two birdies on the front and two on the back in the second round.  Garrett had a team-best four birdies on the front, including consecutive birdies on No. 6 and No. 7, and added a birdie on No. 13 for a 71 on Saturday.  Junior Preston Heyward (+4) fired a 70 on Saturday with three birdies on the back nine to conclude second-round play in 59th place.

North Carolina (-26) holds a 19-stroke lead over East Carolina (-7), while Kennesaw State (-6) moved into third place following two rounds of play.  GRU Augusta (-4) holds a one-stroke lead over Furman, which is tied with Maryland (-3) for fifth place.

The tournament concludes on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m.

 

UNCG ninth at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team moved up two spots in the team standings to ninth place after the second round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The Spartans posted a team score of 3-under-par 285 and sit 1-under-par 575 (290-285) after 36 holes. The third and final round will be played Sunday with UNCG set for 8-8:40 a.m. tee times off of hole No. 1.

Sophomore Carter Jenkins moved up four spots into a tie for 16th place at 2-under-par 142. Jenkins posted his second straight 1-under-par 71 Saturday, posting four birdies, four bogeys and 10 par scores.

Junior Taylor Coalson made the biggest move for the Spartans in round two, improving 19 spots into a tie for 24th at 1-under-par 143 (73-70). Coalson had a roller coaster afternoon posting his 2-under par 70 round, as he tallied seven birdies to go along with three bogeys and a double bogey.

Sophomore Jake McGlone carded the Spartans’ top round Saturday with a 3-under-par 69. McGlone sits in a tie for 53rd with a 3-over-par 147 (78-69) after two rounds. Freshman Josh Stockwell is also 3-over-par 147 after opening his collegiate career with a 71 before carding 76 Saturday. Senior Roy Dixon rounds out the Spartans’ in the lineup with a 6-over-par 150 as he has posted back-to-back rounds of 75.

North Carolina continues to hold the overall team lead, as the Tar Heels are at 26-under-par 550 (273-277) on their home course. East Carolina is second at 7-under-par 569 (586-583), while Kennessaw State is 6-under-par 570 (288-282). Ben Griffin of North Carolina holds the individual lead at 8-under-par 136 (167-169), while teammate William Register is 7-under-par 137 (67-70).

 

Mercer tied for 11th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Emmanuel Kountakis fired a 2-under 70 to highlight the Mercer men’s golf team’s Saturday second round at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.  Mercer’s team score of 293 followed Friday’s 287 and has the Bears tied for 11th place on the team leaderboard.

Mercer’s team total of 580 is 4-over-par and has the squad tied with Chattanooga after 36 holes.  The Bears will enter Sunday’s final round five strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb and Boston College.

Host North Carolina leads the event with a two-day total of 550.  East Carolina (569), Kennesaw State (570), GRU Augusta (572), Furman (573) and Maryland (573) round out the top five.

Kountakis is now tied for eighth place individually with back-to-back rounds of 70.  The Augusta, Ga., native is currently four strokes off the tournament lead held by North Carolina’s Ben Griffin.

Junior Trey Rule and freshman Jerry Ren are both tied for 43rd place overall with scores of 146.  Both players shot 72 on Friday and 74 on Saturday.

Junior Jeffrey Heinicka carded a 75 in the second round and is tied for 59th at 147.  Sophomore Sean Smothers followed Friday’s 77 with a 75 Saturday and is tied for 75th place.

Sunday’s final round is slated for an 8 a.m. start.

 

Chattanooga tied for 11th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore golfer Wes Gosselin led the Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team Saturday at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. Gosselin’s 2-under-par 70 led the way as the team recorded a 6-over 294.

Gosselin’s day was solid. He recorded three birdies and 14 pars with a lone bogey for his 2-under day. He is now tied for 24th at 1-under for the event.

That’s tied for the team lead with Ewan Scott. Scott’s 75 today was one behind Liam Johnston’s 74. Andrew Weathers also turned in a 75 to round out the counting scores. Brooks Thomas had the drop score with a 76.

Sunday’s final 18 begins at 8 a.m. for the Mocs. Weathers starts on No. 1 ahead of Thomas (8:10), Johnston (8:20), Gosselin (8:30) and Scott (8:30). The squad is playing with Mercer, VCU and UNCG.

 

Western Carolina’s Julamool leads The Invitational at The Ocean Course; Catamounts eighth

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Western Carolina freshman Bright Julamool carded a career-low round of 5-under-par 67 to move atop the individual leader board through two rounds at The Invitational at The Ocean Course. The Catamounts sit in a two-way tie for eighth after back-to-back rounds of 298, matching Charleston Southern at 596, just outside the top five.

Julamool backed up his first career round of 3-under-par 69 on Friday with a new low round of 5-under-par 67 for a two-day total of 136. The Bangkok, Thailand, native leads the 81-golfer field by a stroke ahead of a two-way tie for second between Chase Koepka of South Florida and Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes.

Paired with golfers from Charleston Southern and the tournament host, College of Charleston, Western Carolina's scoring five and the tournament field hit the links with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Catamount senior J.T. Poston sits five strokes off the pace after a two-round score of 141 (70-71) in sixth place entering Sunday's final round.

Rounding out WCU's scoring five are freshman Jackson Bishop in a tie for 64th at 159, while senior Matthew Turner (160) is tied for 68th and junior Tyler Lail (169) is 79th overall.

First-round leader South Florida (566) continues to pace the 14-team field, leading second-place Georgia Southern (582) by 16 strokes. Georgia State advanced three spots to sit third at 584, followed by Kentucky (585) and Troy (587) to round out the top five.

 

ETSU trio wraps competition at World Amateur Team Championship

KARUIZAWA, Japan – Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) put together a strong run at the World Amateur Team Championship as the Buccaneer junior golfer finished tied for 29th at 10-under-par 276 (72-73-66-65).

Meronk, who was 2-over after the first two rounds of the championship, played the final 36 holes at 12-under to register his top-30 finish in the field of 200 golfers. For the second straight day, Meronk posted a bogey-free round en route to totaling six more birdies. Overall, 12 of Meronk’s 15 birdies came in the final two rounds, while the Buccaneer standout also carded an eagle on the par-6, 787-yard No. 18 in round two on the Oshitate Course. Meronk ended the championship playing the par 3s at 1-under and the par 5s at 6-under.

Meronk’s teammate and ETSU sophomore Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Slaskie, Poland) shot an even-par 71 (Oshitate Course) in the final round and finished the tournament tied for 60th at 5-under-par 281 (70-71-69-71). Like Meronk, Gradecki registered 15 birdies in the championship and also played the par 5s at 6-under.

Meronk and Gradecki helped guide Poland to finish tied for 22nd at 15-under-par 557, while their ETSU teammate Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) directed the Welsh into a tie for 35th. Individually, Pugh ended the tournament at 1-over-par 287 (70-73-72-72). Pugh was even-par 72 in Saturday’s final round and finished the week with 14 birdies.

Overall, the United States won its 15th Eisenhower Trophy as the Americans held off Canada by two strokes, 534-536. SMU junior Bryson DeChambeau birdied the final hole and Canadian playing partner Corey Conners closed with a bogey, which gave the U.S. a two-stroke victory.

Spain’s Jon Rahm entered the final round with the individual lead and the Spaniard won the individual crown by three shots over Lucas Herbert of Australia. Rahm finished with an overall score of 23-under-par 263 (70-64-62-67).

Meronk, Gradecki and Pugh now return to Johnson City, Tenn., and gear up for ETSU’s season opener, which begins Sept. 22 at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
