KARUIZAWA, Japan – Mateusz Gradecki (Oborniki Slaskie, Poland) carded an even-par 71 in the second round of the World Amateur Team Championship on Thursday and remains at 2-under-par 141 for the championship.
After posting a 2-under-par 70 in the opening round on the Iriyama Course, Gradecki played the Oshitate Course on Thursday and finished with five birdies and five bogeys in round two. The Buccaneer sophomore golfer played the front nine at 1-over and was 2-over thru 12 holes; however, Gradecki answered with birdies on Nos. 13, 15 and 16, moving him to 3-under for the tournament. After registering a par on the par-3, 149-yard 17th, Gradecki finished the round with a bogey on the rare par-6, 787-yard 18th, putting him back to even-par for the round. Overall, Gradecki enters third-round action in a tie for 57th.
Junior Adrian Meronk (Wroclaw, Poland) totaled a 2-over-par 73 on the Oshitate Course and is 2-over 145 for the championship. Meronk finished the round strong as he eagled the par-6 18th and also carded a birdie on the par-4, 395-yard 11th.
While Gradecki and Meronk were playing the Oshitate Course, senior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) was representing Wales on the Iriyama Course on Thursday. Pugh moved to even-par 143 for the tournament after finishing with a 1-over 73 in the second round. The Buccaneer senior parred 17 of the 18 holes and bogeyed his final hole of the day. Pugh enters the third round in a tie for 79th.
Marcus Kinhult of Sweden still leads all individuals at 12-under-par 131, while Argentina leaped ahead of Canada, Sweden and Switzerland for the team lead. Argentina has a one-stroke lead over Sweden, Switzerland and the United States at 18-under-par.
Third-round play is set to begin Thursday evening (Friday morning in Japan) as Pugh is the first of the three Buccaneers to tee off. Pugh’s round begins at 6:10 p.m. EDT, while Meronk tees off 30 minutes later at 6:40 p.m. and Gradecki goes out at 6:50 p.m.
