PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Due to unplayable course conditions, the 83rd edition of the SCGA Amateur Championship was reduced to a 54-hole event and Wofford College golfer Andrew Novak was declared the 2014 champion.
After 1.25 inches of rain overnight and a total of almost four inches over the last three days, The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island took as much as it could handle. With unpassable fairways, ponds in the bunkers and overall saturated conditions, play was not possible within the hours needed to complete the final round. This is only the second time in the 83-year history of the event that the championship has been reduced to 54 holes.
With a final score of 8-under par 215, Novak, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., was officially crowned winner of the 2014 SCGA Amateur Championship. After an opening score of 65, the Wofford golfer proved too hard to catch as he led wire-to-wire to win his first SCGA Championship.
A former winner of the SC Junior Golf Association’s Beth Daniel Junior Azalea, the 19-year-old Novak said, “It feels good to win. … It’s a big accomplishment to win the State Amateur.”
Also competing in the event was Wofford senior Brannon Hudson, who posted a score of 215 to finish tied for 10th. Chandler Brazeal, who graduated from Wofford in May, fired a 220 to finish tied for 27th. Sophomore Jeremy Grab was tied for 42nd at 225 and senior Cory Taylor was 51st with a 227.
The 2014 SCGA Amateur Championship was played at The Reserve Golf Club of Pawleys Island over the par-72, 7,056-yard Greg Norman layout. The field consisted of 126 players that were either exempt or qualified at one of four sites. There was a cut to the low 70 and ties after the first two days of play. The Amateur Championship is one of 20 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association.
