Former Moc Robb Falls in Round of 16 at British Am

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Recent Chattanooga Mocs graduate Chris Robb went out in the round of 16 at the 119th British Amateur at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Robb lost to fellow Scottish amateur Bradley Neil 3&1.

Robb’s birdie on the par-5 second gave him an early 1-up lead. A bogey on four squared the match, but a par on six put the former Moc back up by a hole.

Back-to-back bogeys on seven and eight turned over the lead to his fellow countryman. It swelled to 3-down when a birdie on 15 looked to provide a spark for Robb. But it was not meant to be as his opponent tallied birdie on 17 to claim the 3&1 triumph.

Fellow Scots and UTC teammates Liam Johnston and Ewan Scott also competed at the British Amateur, with Johnston advancing with Robb from stroke play to the match-play portion of the event. Johnston lost 2&1 Thursday in the round of 32.

Robb was not the only Moc on the course Friday. Rising UTC sophomore Zac Stolz had a great day at the 42nd Rice Planters Amateur at Snee Farm Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. He fired a 4-under-par 68 in his third round and is tied for ninth with 18 holes to play.

Stolz turned in six birdies on the day and has 11 in his last 28 holes. He is 4-under for the tourney, eight strokes behind the leader Rigel Fernandes, a rising sophomore at USF.

Stuart Thomas and Wes Gosselin made the cut to tee it up this weekend in Birmingham, Ala., at the Greystone Invitational. After 36 holes, Thomas is tied for 36th at 3-over par, 147, while Gosselin is tied for 52nd at 6-over. He and Thomas each shot 73 (+1) Friday. Kory Webb and Andrew Weathers missed the cut.
