WCU's Poston Earns All-America Honorable Mention

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After being named PING All-East Region back in late May, Western Carolina junior men’s golfer J.T. Poston earned another impressive honor on Thursday as he was named a Division I PING All-America  honorable mention as selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Three 10-golfer teams (first, second and third) were selected as All-America with an additional 30 different golfers earning honorable-mention plaudits. Poston was one of two from the Southern Conference to earn honorable-mention status, joined by Chattanooga’s Chris Robb.

Poston is the second Catamount men’s golfer to earn honorable-mention accolades from the association all time, joining former standout Matt Cook (2004-08), who earned the same distinction as a senior in 2008.

Named the SoCon Men’s Golfer of the Year following his individual medalist honors at the conference tournament, Poston went on to a career-best-tying 38th-place finish at the NCAA Raleigh Regional. A combined 26 of his 33 seasonal rounds were carded at even-par or better, including 16 rounds in the 60s. He concluded the year ranked eighth on the GolfStat Cup standings and was fifth nationally in the Golfstat statistic rankings.

A product of Hickory, N.C., Poston recorded nine top-10 finishes, including placing in the top five eight times with four individual medalist honors in his 11 seasonal events. He recorded WCU's all-time best single-season scoring average at 70.27, and will enter his senior year atop the career stroke average chart at 71.97.

Now a two-time All-East Region selection by the GCAA, the three-year starter graced two national player of the year watch lists in 2013-14, as he was considered for both the Ben Hogan and the Haskins awards. He also appeared on the short list to make the United States’ Palmer Cup squad.
