PINEHURST, N.C. – Two Southern Conference men’s golfers advanced to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open on Monday, as Davidson’s Richard Fountain and UNCG’s Carter Jenkins made it through a local qualifying round at Pinewild Country Club.

Fountain and Jenkins are among six qualifiers from the field of 120 professional and amateur golfers that will advance to sectional qualifying. Sectional qualifying is conducted at two sites internationally on May 26 and 10 sites nationally on June 2. Sectional qualifiers then advance to the 114th U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., on June 12-15, 2014.

Just days away from competing in his third NCAA Golf Regional, Fountain captured co-medalist honors Monday afternoon with a 6-under 66. Fountain birdied his final three holes and recorded seven on the day.

On Thursday, the 2011 SoCon Champion and three-time all-conference performer will tee off in the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.

Jenkins, the 2014 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, was one of just two amateurs to qualify from the Pinewild event. He posted a 4-under-par 68, finishing tied for fourth on the round as he posted five birdies, three bogeys and an eagle-2 on the par-4 hole No. 9.

His play Monday served as a final tune-up before the Spartans head to their first-ever NCAA Regional, in Auburn, Ala., on Thursday-Saturday.

Also qualifying for the sectional round were professional McCuen Elmore, who tied Fountain with a 6-under 66, Jake Fields (5-under, 67) and Kamito Hirai (4-under, 68). The final spot, which went to Sean Moore, came down to a playoff, as five different golfers were tied at 3-under 69, including former UNCG standout Andy Bare.
