Georgia Southern finishes fifth at Mason Rudolph
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Charlie Martin shot a 73 to garner fourth place, matching his best career finish, and Georgia Southern posted a team total of 285 to finish fifth in the final round of the Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt Legends South Course on Sunday.
The Eagles’ total Sunday was the sixth-lowest round of the weekend, and they finished 16-over-par for the tournament, three back of Mercer (+13) and Louisville. Alabama (-5), ranked first in the country, posted a 12-under-par 272 Sunday to run away with the title, and Vanderbilt (+4) finished second in its home event, which featured six top-50 teams.
Florida State’s Jack Maguire (-10) backed up his 66 Saturday with another 66 Sunday to take medalist honors by seven strokes over Vanderbilt’s Ben Fogler (-3), who shot a 68 Sunday. Robin Sciot-Siegrist (-3) of Louisville shot a 67 to move into a tie for second.
Martin finished with a 2-under-par 211 for the tournament to lead the Eagles, and Scott Wolfes shot a 3-under-par 68 Sunday to move from 26th into a tie for 12th. Hayden Anderson posted an even-par 71 to tie for 29th, while Henry Mabbett shot a 73 to tie for 39th. Will Evans posted an 81 Sunday.
Martin was 4-over through his first 15 holes before birdieing 16 and 18 to finish the round and solidify his fourth career top-5 finish, matching a fourth-place outing at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in the fall of 2012.
Wolfes birdied three of his first six holes and following a bogey on hole 10, ran off seven straight pars. The junior birdied the par-5 18th hole for his 68. Anderson was 3-over after 13 holes, but the senior birdied three of his last five coming in.
Mabbett played the front nine 1-over before posting bogeys on 10 and 12. The sophomore improved to 2-over with a birdie on hole 14 and finished his round with four straight pars.
The Eagles capped the regular season with three consecutive top-five outings, including a win in the Schenkel Invitational and a second-place outing at the FAU Slomin Center Invitational.
Georgia Southern plays in its final Southern Conference Championship at National Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C., April 20-22.
Appalachian State finishes 10th at Irish Creek Collegiate
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Senior Casey Komline climbed the leaderboard on Sunday and the Mountaineers posted a 10th-place finish at the Irish Creek Collegiate at the par-71, 7,099-yard The Club at Irish Creek.
Komline shot a 1-under-par 70 in the final round to improve from 27th place on Saturday to a tie for 12th place in the tournament. Komline shot a 3-over-par 216 for the tournament and won the head-to-head battle against 79 golfers.
The Appalachian State University men’s golf team shot a 31-over-par 883 for the tournament, 24 shots behind tournament champion No. 47 Georgia State. The Panthers was able to surpass second-place North Florida by one stroke finishing with a 7-over-par 859. North Florida finished with an 8-over-par 860 and tournament host Charlotte finished in third place with a 19-over-par 871.
After tying for 46th place on the first day, Lee Mitchell was able to go 3-over-par in the final round to finish tied for 30th and second for the Mountaineers. John Michael Cole, who was first for Appalachian after day one, finished tied for 41st and third for the Mountaineers.
Eric Eberspeaker was not able to better his position in the final round, finishing in 52nd place. Caleb Keck finished last for the Mountaineers and tied for 81st place overall.
M.J. Maguire of North Florida, who is ranked No. 54 in the country, earned medalist honors at 8-under-par following a final-round 68. Charlie Bull of Akron and Niall Platt of Notre Dame finished 4-under-par, tying for second place.
Appalachian will continue course action at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, S.C., on April 14, in what will be its last tournament of the regular season before the Southern Conference Championship.
Davidson finishes 11th at Irish Creek Collegiate
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Richard Fountain and David Sargent finished tied for 21st to lead the Davidson men’s golf team at the 2014 Irish Creek Collegiate on Sunday.
The 54-hole event was played on The Club at Irish Creek par-71, 7,099-yard layout.
Playing in their final tune up before the league championship, the Wildcats came home 11th with a three-round total of 884 (297-289-298). Despite finishing just outside the top 10, Davidson concluded the annual event just 11 strokes out of fifth place.
Georgia State (288-282-289=859), which shared the overnight lead, fired the lowest round of the day to claim the team title by one stroke over North Florida (291-279-290=860).
On the heels of a tournament-low 7-under 64 in Saturday’s second round, M.J. Maguire (-8/205) of North Florida carded a 3-under 68 to capture the individual crown. Charlie Bull (Akron) and Niall Platt (Notre Dame) finished tied for second at 4-under.
Sargent (73-75-71=219) paced the Wildcats in the final round with an even-par 71 to record his lowest finish of the season.
In addition to Fountain and Sargent’s top-25 finish, Samuel Echikson (73-79-76=228) and Andy Simmons (79-74-75=228) ended tied for 65th, while Ralph Blasey (79-69-81=229) was one back of his teammates.
Alex Nianouris (75-77-78) and Todd Eckstein (81-76-74), who were competing as individuals for Davidson, finished at 230 and 231, respectively.
The Wildcats will enjoy a two-week break before heading to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Southern Conference Championship at The National Golf Club.
