UTC's Johnston Named Men's Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga senior Liam Johnston has been named the Southern Conference men’s golfer of the week for all competition from March 19-25. The selection is made by the league office.

Johnston shot a 1-under-par 215 at the Linger Longer Invitational over the weekend, pacing the Mocs to an eighth-place finish in the loaded field. Twelve of the 15 teams in the field were ranked in the top 100 nationally, including eight in the top 50 and two in the top five. No. 5 Georgia won the tournament by 10 strokes over No. 1 Alabama.

A native of Dumfries, Scotland, Johnston turned in a 4-under 68 in the first round and a 3-over 75 in the second. He capped his weekend with an even-par 72 Sunday to finish in a tie for 13th among the 84 golfers in the field, six of which were ranked in the top 50 nationally. Johnston finished ahead of No. 39 Jimmy Beck of Kennesaw State and No. 43 MJ Maguire of North Florida.

Johnston’s 68 on Saturday was his low round of the spring. He matched his career high with six birdies in the round.

The weekly award is the first of Johnston’s career.

Chattanooga concludes its regular-season slate at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss., April 7-8.
