GSU's Wolfes Named Men's Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern junior Scott Wolfes has been named the Southern Conference men’s golfer of the week for all competition from March 12-18. The selection is made by the league office.

Wolfes won the Eagles’ own Schenkel Invitational over the weekend, firing a 7-under 209 for the two-stroke win. The St. Simons, Ga., native turned in three rounds under par, shooting 71, 70 and 68 to become GSU’s first individual champion in the event since 1989 and just the third in the 35-year history of the tournament.

Wolfes also helped the Eagles claim the team title for the first time ever, as GSU shot an even-par 288 in the final round to claim the eight-stroke win over runner-up UAB with a 14-under 850 (286-276-288). The tournament featured four teams ranked in the top 20 nationally and six in the top 50. Fifteen players in the field carried individual top-100 rankings.

The individual win was the third of Wolfes’ career and was good for his ninth top-five finish. The reigning SoCon Golfer of the Year, Wolfes also earned the first weekly honor of the 2014 campaign on Feb. 26. This week’s award is the fourth of his career.

Georgia Southern returns to action at the FAU Slomin Autism Invite in Lake Worth, Fla., on March 28-30.

Also nominated: Lee Mitchell (Appalachian State), Sam Echikson (Davidson) and Wes Gosselin (Chattanooga).
