UNCG tied for 13th at Puerto Rico Classic
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The No. 62 UNCG men’s golf team opened the spring portion of the 2013-14 schedule with the 16th annual Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday with an 8-over-par 296 to sit in a tie for 13th place overall in the elite field that includes 14 top-100 teams and five top-10 programs. No. 1 Alabama leads after round one with a 15-under-par 273 at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course. Round two will be played Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson led the Spartans on day one with a 1-under-par 71 to sit in 17th place overall. Coalson tallied five birdies on the round, including his final hole of the afternoon.
Junior Alex Ehlert was the Spartans’ second finisher with an even-par 72, while classmate Roy Dixon posted 1-over-par 73. Ehlert sits in a tie for 28th overall after 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey. Dixon is in 33rd place overall, as he recorded three birdies to go along with four bogeys.
Joining the No. 62 Spartans in the tournament field are No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 25 SMU, No. 33 Northwestern, No. 38 Purdue, No. 42 Clemson, No. 43 North Carolina, No. 59 Missouri, No. 66 East Tennessee State, No. 93 NC State and No. 108 Michigan. Additionally, the field includes 29 of the top 150 players in the country with 11 in the top 50.
Play at John Hayt Collegiate Invitational suspended
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – First-round play at the at The John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the par-72, 7,001-yard Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was suspended Sunday due to inclement weather in the area. Play was originally suspended at 1:07 p.m. and resumed at 4 p.m. Play was suspended for the day due to darkness at 6:05 p.m.
Furman (+9) is tied for 11th place in the team standings, while Paladin sophomore Preston Cole is even through 12 holes after registering a birdie on No. 1.
Round one will resume Monday at 8:20 a.m., with second-round play beginning following the completion of round one. Pairings will remain unchanged for Monday’s second round, which will begin at approximately 9:15 a.m.
