Elon ties for seventh at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Elon men's golf team wrapped up its first spring tournament of the year, the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, by shooting a final-round 299 on its way to a two-day score of 900 (294-307-299). The score placed the Phoenix in a tie for seventh in the 17-team event.
Pacing the maroon and gold was Will DiIanni, who finished in a fourth-place tie out of 90 individuals. He shot a 1-under 71 over his final 18 holes and tallied a three-round score of 221 (71-79-71). DiIanni finished with 11 birdies, tied for the second-most in the tournament.
Just two strokes back in a tie for ninth with a score of 223 (76-73-74) was Jonathan DiIanni. He had one eagle.
Troy Beaver's 227 (73-77-77) placed him in a tie for 31st. Beaver tallied 36 pars.
Elon's contingent also included Jeff Krieger, who shot a 231 (74-80-77) to tie for 44th, and Jack Adkins, who posted a 241 (77-78-86) to finish 74th.
VCU's Adam Ball claimed medalist honors with a 212 (73-73-66), edging out Presbyterian's Davis Parker by one stroke.
USC Aiken captured the team title with a score of 888 (297-296-295). Just one shot back was Presbyterian (300-301-288=889).
Charleston Southern (894) placed third and VCU (895) finished fourth. Radford and Austin Peay tied for fifth with 898s.
Elon's next event is the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, which will be played in Aiken, S.C., March 10-11.
Wofford finishes ninth at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s golf team completed the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Tuesday, earning ninth place behind the efforts of freshmen Andrew Novak and Jeremy Grab.
Novak headed all Terriers with a top-10 finish, taking ninth place with a three-round total of 7-over-par 223. He shot a 1-under 71 on his final round, tying for the third-best individual round of the day. Grab entered the day tied for seventh place but shot a 6-over 78 on Tuesday to finish tied for 22nd with a tournament total of 10-over 226. Still, Grab led the field in par-3 scoring, combining to shoot 4-under-par.
The Terriers climbed one spot on the team leaderboard, starting the day in 10th place after Monday’s first two rounds. Wofford closed with its best round of the tournament of 7-over-par 295, finishing 15 strokes off champion USC Aiken. Aiken also shot a 295 to win by one stroke over Presbyterian, carding a winning total of 24-over-par 888.
Wofford’s ninth-place showing in the 17-team field bested the likes of DePaul, Campbell, William & Mary, Cleveland State, Richmond, Dayton, Ohio and High Point. Southern Conference foe Elon took a tie for seventh with host Francis Marion, just three strokes better than the Terriers.
Junior Brannan Hudson and seniors Chandler Brazeal and George Perkovich rounded out Wofford’s five competitors. Hudson shot a 2-over 73 on Tuesday to earn a tie for 31st place, while Brazeal and Perkovich tied for 38th and 58th, respectively.
VCU’s Adam Bell took medalist honors with a three-round total of 4-under-par 212. Bell shot a 6-under 66 on his final round to hold off Presbyterian’s Davis Parker, who shot a 2-under 70 and finished a stroke off the lead.
The Wofford men’s golf team has next week off before traveling to the Davidson College Invitational, March 3-4, in Davidson, N.C.
Chattanooga finishes seventh at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
MOBILE, Ala. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team finished seventh Tuesday at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The Mocs ended the 54-hole event at 878 after Tuesday’s 296 on the Magnolia Grove Crossings Course.
Davis Bunn ended up tied for 11th at 1-under-par 215. He followed up his opening rounds of 72 with a 71 Tuesday. He birdied holes four, five, six and eight to get to 4-under early before a double bogey derailed the train on nine. The five birdies on his final card are the most since registering six in the season-opening 18 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Chris Robb also turned in a 1-under 71 Tuesday. His total of 220 (+4) tied for 20th. Liam Johnston and Wes Gosselin rounded out the counting scores with 77s.
Auburn won with a 6-under-par 858. That was six better than Kentucky and seven clear of third-place Memphis. Wake Forest’s Clancy Waugh (210) started the day tied for third at minus-2, but his 4-under 68 earned medalist honors. Auburn’s Niclas Carlsson was runner-up at 212, while five golfers shared third-place at 213.
Brooks Thomas led Chattanooga’s individual contingent of four entered in the USA Individual played at the same time at Magnolia Grove Falls Course. Brooks ended up in seventh, shooting 224. Stuart Thomas tied for eighth at 225. Zac Sotlz tied for 17th at 288, two ahead of Benni Weilguni in 20th (230).
The Mocs are back on the tee in two weeks, traveling to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They begin the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on March 2 at Querencia Golf Club, with three days of 18 holes finishing March 4.
Davidson finishes 12th at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
MOBILE, Ala. – Led by an even-par round of 72 from Ralph Blasey on Tuesday, Davidson carded a 54-hole total of 894 (299-297-298) to finish 12th at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate hosted by the University of South Alabama.
The two-day event was played on the par-72, 7,212-yard Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Club layout.
A two-time All-Southern Conference performer and NCAA participant, Richard Fountain led the squad with a 17th-place finish and a three-round total of 219.
Following a disappointing opening day, which included a 78 and 76, Blasey erased two early bogeys with three birdies on his back nine to climb the leaderboard and finish tied for 51st.
Despite a triple-bogey on the par-4 fifth, Sam Echikson (222) posted three birdies and turned in a solid 2-over 74 to finish tied for 34th.
Also competing for the Wildcats was Alex Nianouris (81-80-79), who placed tied for 70th, following a final-round 79.
No. 27 Auburn, one of four nationally ranked schools in the 15-team field, captured the team title with a two-day total of 6-under 858 (290-282-286). The Tigers finished six strokes clear of No. 36 Kentucky and seven ahead of No. 41 Memphis.
Wake Forest's Clancy Waugh fired his second 4-under 68 of the event to claim individual medalists by two swings over day-one leader Niclas Carlsson of Auburn.
The Wildcats will enjoy a two-week break before hosting the Davidson College Invitational at River Run Country Club, March 3-4.
Samford finishes 15th at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
MOBILE, Ala. – The Samford University men’s golf team turned in its best score of the 2014 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday as the Bulldogs carded a third-round score of 295 en route to a 15th-place finish at the two-day event held hosted by the University of South Alabama at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course.
The 15-team field competed in 36 holes Monday followed by the final 18-hole round Tuesday at the par-72, 7,212-yard course. The season-opening tournament featured 10 nationally ranked teams, including No. 27 Auburn, No. 28 Wake Forest and No. 36 Kentucky.
Additionally, the field also consisted of Samford, No. 41 Memphis, No. 53 South Alabama, No. 58 Georgia State, No. 71 Chattanooga, No. 79 Ole Miss, No. 84 Middle Tennessee, No. 98 Davidson, Akron, Illinois State, Southern Miss and Texas State.
The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a final team total of 909 (301-313-295). Samford rallied for its best mark of the week in the third round and nearly caught Southern Miss for 14th place.
The Bulldogs’ Zach Hughes and William Catanzaro paced the team with identical 54-hole scores of 221. Catanzaro blazed the course for a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to finish the event tied for 26th place in the individual standings. Hughes’ best score of the tournament occurred on Monday’s second round as he posted an even-par 72.
Rounding out Samford’s scores were Ashton Nix (77-82-73=232), Mac Hennesey (77-82-78=237) and Chris Clouser (75-83-85=243).
Auburn claimed the team title of the event and streaked to the championship with a three-round total of 6-under-par 858. Additionally, Wake Forest’s Clancy Waugh earned individual medalist honors with a 6-under-par total of 210.
The Samford University men’s golf team will next be in action March 3-4, at Hoover Golf Course, as the Bulldogs are slated to host the 2014 Samford Intercollegiate.
