Elon tied for third at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Led by Jonathan DiIanni's 149 (76-73), the Elon men's golf team opened its spring season by carding a two-round score of 601 (294-307) to sit in a tie for third place following day one of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
Over the course of his 36 holes, DiIanni posted 25 pars. His 149 has him tied for 12th among the 90 participants.
Just one stroke back in a tie for 18th are a pair of Elon golfers. Both Will DiIanni and Troy Beaver finished day one with scores of 150. Will DiIanni got to 150 with rounds of 71 and 79 and carded seven birdies, tied for the third-most in the tournament on day one. Beaver posted rounds of 73 and 77 and notched 24 pars.
Jeff Krieger's mark of 154 (74-80) has him tied for 37th with one round to play. Krieger also posted seven pars.
Rounding out the field for the maroon and gold was Jack Adkins, who shot a 155 (77-78) and will enter the final round in a tie for 47th. Adkins recorded 24 pars.
Presbyterian's Davis Parker was the lone player to post a sub-par score through the first two rounds. Parker leads the field with a 1-under 143 (71-72).
USC Aiken leads the 17-team field with a two-round score of 593 (297-296). Six strokes back is Charleston Southern (299-300=599).
Elon is tied for third with Presbyterian (300-301) at 601 and has a one-stroke edge over fifth-place Radford (306-296=602).
The only other Southern Conference team in the field is Wofford. The Terriers shot a 608 (308-300) and sit 10th.
Wofford tied for 10th at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Jeremy Grab fired rounds of 4-over-par 76 and even-par 72 on Monday to lead the Wofford College men’s golf team through the opening day of the spring 2014 season at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
Grab made his Terrier debut and is tied for seventh place after the first two rounds. As a team, Wofford shot rounds of 20-over-par 308 and 12-over-par 300. The Terriers are tied for 10th place heading into Tuesday’s final round of the 54-hole tournament at 32-over-par, 15 shots back of tournament leader and host USC Aiken.
Also competing for the Terriers were freshmen Andrew Novak, junior Brannan Hudson and seniors Chandler Brazeal and George Perkovich. Novak leads the remaining bunch with a two-round total of 8-over-par 152.
The tournament consists of 17 teams and 90 competitors.
Tuesday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Chattanooga tied for fifth at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
MOBILE, Ala. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team got off to a slow start in the morning but ended the day strong and is tied for fifth after 36 holes at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The Mocs shot rounds of 294 and level-par 288 for their total of 582.
The afternoon 288 is the fourth-best round of the season. It moved the squad from seventh place to a tie with Memphis in fifth.
Senior Davis Bunn led Chattanooga with even-par rounds of 72 for a total of 144. He is tied for 10th, one stroke clear of Ewan Scott, tied for 14th at plus-1. Wes Gosselin is another shot back at 146, tied for 16th.
Chris Robb and Liam Johnston shook off opening 18 troubles to shoot 73 and 72, respectively, in the afternoon. Robb stands at 149, while Johnston checks in at 151.
Auburn is the team leader at 4-under-par 572. Kentucky and Georgia State are tied for second with 577, while Middle Tennessee is fourth at 580.
Niclas Carlson (Auburn) and Payne Denman (MT) share the lead at 4-under 140. There is a quartet of golfers tied for third at 142.
The final round starts Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. Central time. Johnston leads off for Chattanooga on No. 1 followed by Robb (8:54), Gosselin (9:03), Scott (9:12) and Bunn (9:21).
Davidson 10th at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
MOBILE, Ala. – Led by Richard Fountain's 2-over-par day, Davidson sits 10th at 596 (299-207) after 36 holes of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Monday.
The two-day event is being played on the par-72, 7,212-yard Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Club layout.
Fountain shot a 74 in the opening round and was poised to finish under par in the second but bogeyed his final three holes to finish at even-par 72 and sit tied for 16th individually. Todd Eckstein (73-75) and Sam Echikson (74-74) both finished the first day two strokes back at 148 to sit tied for 28th individually.
Ralph Blasey (78-76) was Davidson's final scorer and is currently 10-over.
No. 27 Auburn, which is one of four ranked schools in the 15-team field, holds the top spot on the team leaderboard at 4-under 572 (290-282).
The Tigers' Niclas Carlsson and Payne Deman of Middle Tennessee State sit atop the individual standings with 36-hole totals of 4-under 140.
The final 18 holes are slated to tee off from Nos. 1 and 10 Tuesday at 8 a.m.
