Hopke co-medalist, Furman second at shortened Hummingbird Intercollegiate
CASHIERS, N.C. – Sunday’s final round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley has been cancelled due to inclement weather in western North Carolina.
Furman sophomore Wehman Hopke tied with Marshall’s Logan Lagodich for individual medalist honors on Friday with a score of 67, while 25th-ranked Clemson (-6) edged out the Paladins (-5) by one stroke in the opening round.
The Paladins will open the 2015 spring season Feb. 23-24 at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Wofford finishes sixth at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
CASHIERS, N.C. – Heavy rain, frigid temperatures and a forecast for snowfall forced tournament officials to end the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at just 18 holes on Saturday. The Wofford men’s golf team shot at opening-round 9-over-par 293 on Friday to take sixth.
Wofford was led by seniors Brannan Hudson and Cory Taylor. Each carded a 1-over-par 72 to tie for 17th place with nearly identical scorecards of four birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey. Hudson’s four birdies came through his first eight holes.
Sophomore Andrew Novak tied for 28th with a 3-over 74 and sophomore Jeremy Grab claimed a tie for 34th with a 4-over 75. Freshman Evan Grenus had a rough go of it with a 12-over 83 to finish 73rd in the 76-player field.
Clemson won the 12-team tournament with a 6-under-par 278 – one stroke ahead of Furman’s 5-under 279. Furman’s Wehman Hopke and Marshall’s Logan Lagodich were co-medalists with a pair of 4-under 67s.
The end of the tournament concludes Wofford’s fall season. The Terriers pick back up Feb. 17-18 at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
Western Carolina finishes seventh at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
CASHIERS, N.C. – Sunday’s final round of the 2014 Hummingbird Intercollegiate has been canceled, leaving first-round leader Clemson as the team champion. The Tigers (278) claimed the one-stroke victory over Palmetto State rival Furman (279).

Wintry precipitation that fell late Friday evening into Saturday coupled with unfavorable forecasts as it relates to temperatures Saturday night into Sunday morning have prompted officials from both Western Carolina and the Country Club of Sapphire Valley to cancel the final 18 holes of competition.
The final round of the 36-hole Hummingbird Intercollegiate was slated to be played Sunday. The opening round of action was moved from Saturday to Friday due to the impending inclement weather.
Behind the two squads from the Upstate of South Carolina, Marshall finished third after an even-par round of 284, followed by Cardinal Stritch (291) and Wingate (292) in rounding out the top five. Wofford (293) was just ahead of tournament host Western Carolina (295), followed by Samford and Brevard tied for eighth at 298. Rounding out the field was Guilford (10th, 302), Colgate (11th, 308) and Bucknell (12th, 318).
Senior J.T. Poston led the Catamount scoring five in a tie for third-place – his fourth top-10 and second top-five finish of the fall – after shooting 2-under-par 69. He finished tied with WCU individual Taylor Durand, who made his collegiate debut for the Purple & Gold.
The cancelation of the final round concludes play for Western Carolina in the fall portion of its 2014-15 men’s golf schedule. The Catamounts posted three top-10 team finishes in five seasonal events. WCU returns to action in the spring semester, opening at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, hosted by Francis Marion on Feb. 23-24.
Samford ties for eighth at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
CASHIERS, N.C. – With temperatures in the 20s and a thin layer of icy snow covering the course at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, the final two rounds of play at the 2014 Hummingbird Intercollegiate have been canceled.
The final two rounds of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate were slated to be played Sunday. The opening round of action was moved from Saturday to Friday due to the impending inclement weather.
Samford men’s golfer Chris Clouser turned in his best round of the 2014 fall season Friday as the Bulldogs’ native of Huntsville, Ala., carded a brilliant 2-under-par 69 on the opening day of play.
Clouser’s team-best performance moved him into a six-way tie for third place in the individual standings. The finished proved to be the best of his collegiate career. The field for the tournament consisted of 12 teams and 75 competitors.
As a team, Samford earned an eighth-place finish with a first-round tally of 298. Temperatures dropped 15 degrees throughout play Friday as both the winds and precipitation played a major role in the scoring. The Bulldogs battled through the wintry conditions and moved to within just seven strokes out of fourth place in the team standings.
Clemson ended up winning the tournament with a first-round tally of 278, while Furman finished second by a single stroke and Marshall rounded out the top three with an 18-hole mark of 284.
Saturday’s announcement marked the end of Samford’s fall season. The Bulldogs will resume play in their 2014-15 campaign in the spring at the Savannah Quarters Invitational, which will be held Feb. 8-9 at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Georgia.
