Chattanooga finishes third at Bridgestone Golf Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wes Gosselin fired a final-round 68 Sunday to lead the Chattanooga Mocs to a third-place finish in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. His 4-under round paced the Mocs to an even-par 288. That was the second-best team score of the day.
Gosselin’s 68 ties for his best tally of the season. It included a stretch of five straight birdies from 12 through 17, which were his seventh through 12th holes after starting on No. 6 in a shotgun start. His 2-over-par 218 tied him for 12th, which is his best finish in a team event.
Andrew Weathers was the story of the tournament for the Scenic City lads. He got his first career top-five finish, tying for fifth at 2-under. He set new season bests for 36 (139) and 54-hole (214) totals.
Weathers’ final-round 75 was Sunday’s drop score. Ewan Scott shot an even-par 72 Sunday in support of Gosselin’s 68. The team score of 288 was rounded out by Liam Johnston and Kory Webb with twin 74s. Johnston joined Weathers and Gosselin in the top 20, tying for 17th at 220.
No. 21 North Carolina won the event by 12 shots with a 15-under-par 849. Virginia Tech was second, 11 clear of Chattanooga at 861. South Alabama was fourth, four behind the Mocs, with Mercer fifth another two strokes back at 878.
This concludes the Mocs fall slate. The squad returns to action March 2-3 at the Davidson College Invitational.
Mercer finishes fifth at Bridestone Golf Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mercer University men’s golf team finished fifth in a loaded field at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate this weekend to close out the team’s 2014 fall schedule.
The Bears compiled a team score of 293 on Sunday’s final round for a total tally of 878 for the tournament, which included nine teams ranked among the top 75 on the Golf Stat national team rankings. No. 21 North Carolina took home the team title, while Virginia Tech finished second.
Sophomore Emmanuel Kountakis and senior Trey Rule each tied for 10th to lead the way for Mercer this weekend, as both finished the tournament with an even-par 216. Jerry Ren carded a 72 to close his three rounds with a total score of 224 in 35th place, while Sean Smothers, who finished 42nd overall with a score of 225, fired a 74 on Sunday to round out the scoring.
The Bears will return to competitive play in February, as they prepare to compete in their first Southern Conference championship.
UNCG finished ninth at Bridgestone Golf Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team concluded play in the 10th annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on a picture perfect autumn Sunday afternoon at the Grandover Resort East Course. The Spartans as a team finished in ninth place overall, while North Carolina won the team title by 12 strokes over Virginia Tech.
UNCG finished the tournament with an 889 score after posting a 306 in round one, a 288 in round two and a 295 in the third and final round. North Carolina posted a 15-under-par 849 (288-280-281), which is the sixth-lowest team scoring in Bridgestone Golf Collegiate history. Virginia Tech was second with a 3-under-par 861 (286-285-290) as they were the only two teams under par for the weekend.
North Carolina’s Ben Griffin won the individual title with a 10-under-par 206, as he responded from a first-round score of 74 to post scores of 65 and 67 in rounds two and three, respectively. Griffin’s final round allowed him to overtake Virginia Tech’s Scott Vincent, who finished at 9-under-par 207 (66-69-72).
Sophomore Carter Jenkins was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing in a tie for 12th overall. Jenkins finished the 54-hole event with a 2-over-par 218 as he posted first- and third-round scores of 2-over-par 74 while notching a 2-under-par 70 in the middle round.
Sophomore Jake McGlone turned in the Spartans’ top round Sunday, posting a 1-under-par 71 as he carded six birdies in the round. McGlone’s final round moved him up to a 16th-place finished with a 3-over-par 219 (76-72-71).
Freshman Josh Stockwell recorded his best finish of his young career, placing in a tie for 17th overall as an individual. Stockwell’s 17th-place finish improved on his previous top ending of 41st place set at the VCU Shootout. He posted a 4-over-par 220 on the weekend as he opened with a 2-under-par 70 in round one before consecutive scores of 3-over-par 75 in rounds two and three.
Junior Taylor Coalson added a 13-over-par 229 on the weekend but finished with his best round, carding a 1-over-par 73 Sunday. Seniors Alex Ehlert and Roy Dixon rounded out the Spartans’ lineup with 13-over-par 229 scores, as well.
Redshirt sophomore William Thomas added a 48th-place finish as an individual. Thomas finished the three rounds with an 11-over-par 227 (73-78-76). Junior Luke Haithcock was the Spartans’ third individual this weekend and posted a 230 (76-77-77) score.
