Western Carolina finishes 10th at Pinetree Intercollegiate
KENNESAW, Ga. – Western Carolina senior J.T. Poston recorded his third top-10 finish of the fall, carding a final-round, even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish tied for seventh at the Pinetree Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club. The Catamount men’s golf team finished 10th overall with a three-round tally of 916.
Poston countered five bogeys with five birdies – three on the front nine after starting on No. 10. He finished the event with a three-round score of 217 (74-71-72). On Tuesday, Poston was 2-over-par through his first four holes and ultimately made his turn to the front nine at 1-over on the day. Poston birdied the final hole of his tournament on the par-5 ninth to break even on the afternoon.
It was the third time this fall that the Hickory, N.C., product paced the Catamount scoring five.
Freshman Bright Julamool came home 28th after a final-round 76, which included three birdies. He shot 228 for the event with eight combined birdies. Junior Tyler Lail carded his best round of the fall season, turning in an even-par 72 on Tuesday to advance into a tie for 38th overall. Lail had a quiet final round, countering a pair of bogeys with two birdies and 14 pars.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five were sophomores Nont Panayanggool in a tie for 55th overall (80-76-84=240) and Evan Smith in 64th (83-87-83=253) in his first action of the season. Panayanggool was one of 20 golfers to card an eagle during the event.
Playing unattached as an individual, senior Matthew Turner slipped to 62nd overall with a final-round score of 85 to give him 248 for the event.
Tournament host – and now three-time defending champion – Kennesaw State claimed the team title going away, besting runner-up Liberty by 30 strokes. The nationally ranked Owls finished with a 54-hole score of 845, while the second-place Flames, on the strength of a final-round 282, shot 875 for the tournament.
Kennesaw State swept the top three podium positions as Fredrik Nilehn shot 202, including a tournament- and school-record round of 64, followed by 70 and 68. He edged teammates Jimmy Beck by six strokes (69-69-70=208) and Austin Vick by seven (69-68-72=209).
Western Carolina now prepares for its final competition of the fall semester as it hosts the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 at the beautiful Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The 36-hole event features golfers from 15 different teams vying for both team and individual championships.
Practice rounds for the Hummingbird Intercollegiate are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31, with two 18-hole rounds to be played Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-2.
Samford finishes ninth at F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate
HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – Samford men’s golfer Robert Adams registered the best performance of his young career Tuesday as he carded a 54-hole total of 6-under-par 210 and earned a sixth-place finish at the 2014 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.
Adams turned in a score of par or better in each of his three rounds of the tournament and finished just eight strokes behind first-place Logan Hogge (202) of Morehead State. Adams notched in his best score of the two-day competition Monday with a sizzling second-round tally of 4-under-par 68.
As a team, Samford finished in sole possession of ninth place. The Bulldogs concluded the event with a three-round team score of 875 (297-286-292). Ultimately, Samford finished just six strokes behind sixth-place Murray State.
Host school Austin Peay, playing at its home course, The Links at Novadell, cruised to an eight-stroke victory Tuesday with a score of 22-under-par 842. UT Martin (850), Eastern Kentucky (851), Belmont (854) and Southern Illinois (854) rounded out the top five.
Samford’s Austin Jackson turned in the team’s best score Tuesday with a 2-under-par 70. The Bulldogs’ sophomore native of Germantown, Tenn., closed out the tournament with a three-round tally of 219 and finished tied for 25th place in the individual standings.
Rounding out Samford’s scoring in the 2014 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate were sophomore Garrett Moores (225), as well as juniors Jake Miller (231) and Mac Hennessy (232).
The field for this week’s tournament consisted of the following 12 teams: Samford, Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Murray State, Southern Illinois, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin and Western Illinois.
The Samford University men’s golf team will next be in action Nov. 1-2, as the Bulldogs head to Cashiers, N.C., for the 2014 Western Carolina Hummingbird Intercollegiate, which will be held at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. The WCU Hummingbird Intercollegiate will be Samford’s final competition of the fall season.
