Monday's Men's Golf Roundup

Wofford seventh at Badger Invitational

MADISON, Wis. – Wofford men’s golf senior George Perkovich shot the round of his collegiate career on Tuesday, carding a 4-under-par 68 in second-round play at the Badger Invitational to catapult himself into third place at 3-under for the tournament.

Perkovich’s round included an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. He was one of six competitors to card an eagle and one of two players to eagle the ninth. The round under 70 was the first of Perkovich’s Terrier career – his previous low 18 was a 71 at last year’s Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational.

The 4-under round helped Wofford post a team score of 7-over 295, lifting the Terriers from 10th place on Friday and into seventh place at 12-over for the tournament. Though the Terriers shot two strokes better (293) on Sunday, windy conditions Monday resulted in higher scores all around. Wofford’s 295 was the fourth-best round of the day and the Terriers are only five strokes behind second-place Austin Peay (+7).

Junior Brannan Hudson began the day in a tie for third after posting a 2-under 70 on Friday. Hudson was not as sharp Saturday, stumbling to a tie for 25th by shooting a 6-over-par 78. Classmate Cory Taylor began the second round tied with Perkovich at 1-over but also shot a second-round 78 and fell back to a tie for 47th at 7-over for the tournament.

Senior Chandler Brazeal bounced back from a first-round 77 to post a 2-over 74 Saturday and is also tied for 47th with Taylor at 7-over. Freshman Andrew Novak shot two strokes better than his first-round 77, carding a 75 to sit tied for 57th at 8-over.

The third and final round of the Badger Invitational will begin Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. The 14 teams and 74 individuals will go out in a shotgun format.

Georgia Southern sixth at Shoal Creek Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Will Evans shot a 7-under-par 137 in the first two rounds of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club on Monday. The senior is third in the individual standings and led the Georgia Southern golf team to a 4-under-par 572, which puts them in sixth place heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Host UAB (-20) leads the team standings, and Ole Miss (-18) is second. Memphis (-10), Liberty (-8) and Florida (-5) round out the top five. UCF (-3) is seventh, a stroke behind the Eagles. The tournament features seven teams ranked in the top 50.

Evans picked up right where he left off last week, as the senior fired a 68 with six birdies and one double-bogey in the first round. The lone blemish came on the par-3 13th hole. He righted the ship with a birdie on the par-4 14th hole and added a birdie on 16 to make the turn at 1-under. He finished strong as well, birdieing his last two holes to finish 4-under.

Evans’ second round began on hole 10 again, and was even through his first 13 holes. He finished strong again, birdieing three of his final five holes, including the last two, to card a 69.

Christian Humber, who tied for 12th last week, also stayed hot and shot 3-under-par in the first round. The senior birdied three of his first four holes and made the turn at 1-under-par. He was 4-under through 17 holes after consecutive birdies on seven and eight and bogeyed hole 9 to post a 69.

Humber struggled a bit on the first nine holes of his second round, making the turn at 3-over after collecting five bogeys and two birdies. He birdied holes 1 and 3 and made five straight pars before finishing with a birdie to card a 73, giving him a 142 (-2), which is tied for 10th.

Scott Wolfes struggled a bit out of the gates in the first round but recovered nicely down the stretch. After a bogey on hole 4 put him 1-over, the junior birdied holes 6 and 8 to get to 1-under and birdied his final two holes of the round to finish with a 3-under 69. Two double-bogeys on the first nine holes of his second round got things off to a bad start and he finished with a 79.

Classmate Charlie Martin carried the torch in the second round, firing a 68 after carding an 81 in the first round. Martin started the second round on hole 12 and was 1-over heading to the first tee. He got hot from there, posting six birdies on the front nine and adding another one on hole 10 to finish 4-under.

Junior Kim Koivu struggled to an 81 in the first round but recovered to notch a 75 in the second round. Freshman Sam Towler played as an independent and carded a 77-75=152 in his first career collegiate tournament.

Action concludes Tuesday at Shoal Creek, and the Eagles tee off at 8:06 a.m.
