Wofford 10th at Badger Invitational
MADISON, Wis. – The Wofford College men’s golf team began the three-day Badger Invitational Sunday, hosted by the University of Wisconsin at University Ridge Golf Course, shooting a 5-over-par 293 to sit in 10th place after the opening round.
Fourteen teams are competing in the tournament, including South Carolina, Xavier, Kansas, Marquette, Rutgers and host Wisconsin.
Junior Brannan Hudson led the way for the Terriers and is tied for third place in the 74-man field after posting a 2-under round of 70. He is five strokes back of the lead held by South Carolina’s Caleb Sturgeon who shot a 7-under 65. Hudson – the No. 2 golfer in the Southern Conference by stroke average at 69.67 entering the tournament – continues to have a good start to the fall season after finishing tied for second place three weeks ago at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate.
The Terriers also had good scores from senior George Perkovich and junior Cory Taylor, as both shot a 1-over 73 and are tied for 27th place.
Senior Chandler Brazeal and freshman Andrew Novak each posted an opening-round 5-over-par 77. Brazeal and Novak are tied for 58th place on the individual leaderboard.
The team leaderboard is very tight. Though Wofford is 10th out of 14 teams, it is just a stroke behind Charleston Southern, two behind Marquette and three behind both Kansas and Austin Peay, which are tied for sixth. Only 11 strokes separate the top 10 teams, led by South Carolina, which shot a 6-under-par 282. USC Upstate shot 2-under 286 to sit in second place, while Xavier, UMKC and Illinois State all shot 1-under 287 and are tied for third.
Round two of the Badger Invitational begins Monday at 9 a.m. The Terriers are scheduled to tee off from the first hole between 9:45 and 10:21 a.m.
