Georgia Southern second at Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic
STATESBORO, Ga. – Will Evans shot a 3-under 68 to move into a tie for second (-2) and help the Georgia Southern golf team jump into second place after two rounds of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic on Monday afternoon at Warren Golf Course.
Evans eagled the par-5 10th hole and posted consecutive birdies on 14, 15 and 16. The senior shot a 72 in the first round Monday morning as the teams played 36 holes on the day.
Christian Humber (-1), who is playing the tournament as an individual, also shot a 68 in the second round and is tied for fifth. The senior posted birdies on holes 1, 2, 10 and 17, and his lone blemish on the card was a bogey at 18.
Georgia Southern (+7) went 288-287 as a team in the first two rounds and is 10 strokes behind tournament leader Houston (-3). The Eagles are three strokes ahead of Michigan State (+10) and five in front of fourth-place Yale (+12).
Charlie Martin shot a 69 and led the tournament after the first round. The junior had four birdies on the front nine and added another birdie on hole 10. He recorded a 74 in the second round and is tied for 11th.
Newcomer Kim Koivu is tied for 15th after firing a pair of 72s on the day. Henry Mabbett carded a 74 in each round, and Scott Wolfes posted a 73 in the second round after recording an 80 on the first 18.
The third and final round of the tournament is set for Tuesday, and the Eagles will tee off hole 1 at 10 a.m.
Davidson seventh at Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Seniors Richard Fountain and Sam Echikson are tied for 11th just four strokes off the lead as the Davidson men’s golf team sits in seventh place following day one of the 2013 Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.
The 54-hole event is being played on the 7,023-yard, par-71 Warren Golf Club layout.
As a team, the Wildcats fired a 293 on their morning 18 before carding a 294 in round two. Davidson is only two back of host Notre Dame and just nine swings out of third place, currently occupied by Michigan State (578).
Fountain (+1) recorded rounds of 72 and 71, while Echikson (+1) backed his opening 1-under 70 with a 73 in the afternoon. The Wildcat duo is within striking distance of the lead, which is held by Yale’s Will Davenport (-3).
Also competing for the Wildcats are Andy Simmons (+8/T41st), Ralph Blasey (+11/T55) and Todd Eckstein (+12/T64th).
Houston (282-283=565) recorded consecutive sub-par rounds and holds the top spot on the team leaderboard by 10 shots over second-place Georgia Southern (575).
College of Charleston, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Southern Mississippi, UT-Arlington, West Florida and Xavier are also participating in the event.
Tuesday’s final round will begin at 8:30 a.m.
UNCG eighth at VCU Shootout
RICHMOND, Va. – UNCG junior men’s golfer Roy Dixon sits in 11th place overall after 36 holes of the ninth annual Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout, helping the Spartans place eighth overall in the team standings after Monday’s first day at the Hermitage Country Club.
The third and final round will be played Tuesday with 8:45 a.m. tee times.
Dixon shot an even-par 144 in the first two rounds Monday as he opened with a 2-under par 70 in round one before posting a 2-over par 74 in round two. Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech holds the 36-hole lead with a 7-under par 137 as he carded rounds of 69 and 68. Dixon’s first-round score of 70 marked the second under-par round for him in the first four rounds of the 2013-14 season.
UNCG sits in eighth overall with a 594 after turning in scores of 299 and 295 on the first day. No. 33 Virginia Tech leads the even with a 9-under par 567 (287-280), while Iowa State is second with a 569 (282-287).
Freshman Carter Jenkins moved into a tie for 25th overall with a 3-over par 147 Monday. Jenkins opened with a 76 in round one before rebounding with a 1-under par 71 in round two in his second collegiate outing. His second-round score of 71 tied his low-round score from last season at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, where he place ninth overall.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock continued his solid start to the season as he is in 33rd place overall with a 5-oiver par 149. Haithcock displayed consistent scores with a first-round tally of 74 and a second-round number of 75. All five rounds of the young season have been shot with a 76 or under for Haithcock.
Freshman Jake McGlone also turned in a two-round score of 147 to sit in a tie for 25th as an individual. McGlone opened with an even-par 72 in round one then carded a 3-over par 75 in round two. His first-round score of 72 is a career low in his second event of the season.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson and junior Alex Ehlert round out the Spartans’ lineup in 56th and 63rd place, respectively.
The third and final round begins with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The Spartans are set to tee off from holes No. 8, 9, 10 and 11 Tuesday.
Furman seventh at Cardinal Intercollegiate
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Preston Heyward carded a par 72 in both rounds on Monday to lead Furman in the opening day of the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the 7,036-yard Cardinal Club. The Paladins (+11) stand in seventh place out of 15 teams following the first day of competition.
Heyward, who enters Tuesday’s final round tied for 13th place, birdied three holes in each round on Monday to finish the day seven strokes back of leader Hampus Bergman (-7) of McNeese State, who fired a 67 in the opening round and a 70 in the afternoon round.
Junior Michael Borton (+4) registered an even 72 in Monday’s second round after recording three consecutive birdies on 17, 18, and 1, ending the day tied for 26th. Sophomore Preston Cole (+5) fired an opening-round 73 after eagling the par-5 17th-hole and recording a birdie on No. 18 to finish the day tied for 29th with freshman Bryce Howell (+5), who birdied three holes in the second round. Sophomore Wehman Hopke (+7) recovered with a 73 in Monday’s afternoon round to tie for 39th.
Louisville (-9) holds a seven-stroke lead with a 9-under 567. Austin Peay State (-2) is in second place at 574, and Mercer (+6) is third at 582 entering Tuesday’s final round.
The tournament will conclude with a shotgun start Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Western Carolina 10th at Cardinal Intercollegiate
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Junior J.T. Poston carded rounds of 68 and 70 for a 36-hole score of 138, just one stroke off the individual lead, to lead Western Carolina at the Cardinal Intercollegiate being held at the par-72, 7,036-yard Cardinal Club. The Catamounts (594) slipped from second after the opening round into 10th through 36 holes with rounds of 288 and 306.
Paired with golfers from Dayton and UT Martin, WCU’s scoring five will start on the back nine on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 9:12 a.m.
Poston carded 24 pars and nine birdies over Monday’s 36 holes to sit a stroke in arrears of first-round leader Hampus Bergman (137) of McNeese State, who shot rounds of 67 and 70.
Catamount freshman Nont Panayanggool sits in a tie for 33rd entering Tuesday’s final round. The Chiang Mia, Thailand, native carded even-par 72 in his first intercollegiate round, scoring birdie on his first hole as a collegian.
Senior Jack Walsh posted rounds of 3-over 75 and 6-over 78 to stand in a five-way tie for 51st with a 9-over-par 153. Rounding out WCU’s side are junior Matthew Turner in a tie for 56th at 154 (73-81) and freshman Evan Smith in a tie for 78th at 159 (79-80). Turner posted four birdies on Monday – all coming in the first round – while Smith, who was also making his collegiate debut, had two birdies on the opening 18 holes.
Tournament host Louisville leads second-place Austin Peay by seven strokes, 567-574.
Comline, Appalachian State first at Myrtle Beach Invitational
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Appalachian State finished up play on day one of the Myrtle Beach National Intercollegiate on Monday. The Mountaineers find themselves sitting in first overall as a team after round one, shooting a score of 285.
Casey Komline is in a tie for first place overall individually after firing a first-round 3-under 69. Not far behind is teammate Patrick Moriarty, who shot a 71 and finds himself tied for fifth individually.
Caleb Keck is currently in tie for 19th with a first-round total of 73. Andrew Furr is right behind Keck after carding a 74 for round one. Eric Eberspeaker rounds out the scores for Appalachian State after scoring a 74 in round one and finding himself in a tie for 34th individually.
