UNCG third at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team sits alone in third place after the first two rounds of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Finley Golf Course. The Spartans are 6-over 582 after 36 holes and trail NC State (579) and Georgia Tech (564).
UNCG will wrap up the two-day event with third-round tee times Sunday between 9:10-9:46 a.m., with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com.
Junior Roy Dixon paced the team, as he is tied for fourth place overall with a 2-under par 142. Dixon opened the 2013-14 season with a 3-under par 69 in round one and held a share of the lead after his first 18 holes. He was up and down over his first nine holes, posting three birdies and four bogeys, before closing the round with four birdies on his back nine. He followed that up with a 1-over par 73 in round two and is four shots off the lead held by Georgia Tech’s Seth Reeves.
Freshman Carter Jenkins made his collegiate debut and sits in a tie for 12th place overall after 36 holes with a 1-over par 145. Jenkins began his career with a 1-over par 73 and followed that with an even par-72. He posted eight birdies in his first two rounds while recording six bogeys and a triple-bogey.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock posted a 2-over par 146 to sit in a tie for 24th place. He opened the day with a 4-over par 76 but rebounded with a 2-under par 70 in round two, the Spartans’ low score for the second round. He recorded four birdies and only two bogeys in his second 18 holes of play.
Rounding out the Spartans’ lineup was junior Alex Ehlert with a 5-over par 149 (75-74) and sophomore Taylor Coalson with a 9-over par 153 (77-76). Freshman Jake McGlone played in his first collegiate event as an individual and went 8-over par 152 (73-79).
Georgia Tech leads the team event with a 12-under par 564 (283-281) while NC State is second at 579 (284-295). Seth Reeves and Richy Werenski of Georgia Tech hold down the top two spots individually with 6-under par and 5-under par scores, respectively.
Davidson 10th after two rounds at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Playing in its first event of the 2013-14 season, the Davidson men’s golf team sits in 10th place following day one of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
The 54-hole event is being played on the 7,242-yard, par-72 UNC Finley Golf Course, which was designed by Tom Fazio and is rated one of the top courses in the state.
Junior Todd Eckstein leads the way for the Wildcats with a 36-hole total of 149 (75-74). Sam Echikson (74-76), who carded seven birdies on the day, is one back of Eckstein, while Richard Fountain (76-75) is two behind his teammate.
Also competing for Davidson is Ralph Blasey (77-76=153) and freshman Andy Simmons (74-80=154).
After opening with a team score of 299 in the morning, Davidson carded a 301 in the afternoon and will enter the final round nine strokes back of UNCW and 12 behind VCU.
Georgia Tech (-12) holds the top spot on the team leaderboard by 15 strokes over NC State, while the Yellow Jackets’ Seth Reeves (-6) and Richy Werenski (-5) are one-two on the individual leaderboard.
Boston College, Charlotte, Duke, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, UNCG, UNCW and Virginia Commonwealth will also be participating in the event.
The third and final round will begin Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
Furman 12th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Wehman Hopke fired an opening-round 74 and a 77 in the day’s second round to lead Furman on Saturday in the team’s season opener at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
Hopke, who enters Sunday’s final round tied for 43rd place, birdied three holes on the front nine in Saturday’s opening round to finish the day 13 strokes back of leader Seth Reeves of Georgia Tech, who carded a 69 in both rounds on Saturday.
Paladin rookie Bryce Howell notched a 74 in Saturday’s second round after eagling the par-5 17th hole and recording a birdie on No. 4 to finish the day tied for 55th at +9. Junior Michael Borton shot a 76 in each round to tie for 50th place, while sophomore Preston Cole recovered from an opening-round 80 to fire a 75 in round two with birdies on holes 15 and 17.
Georgia Tech holds a 15-stroke lead with a 12-under 564. NC State is in second place at 3-over par, and UNCG is third at 6-over entering Sunday’s final round.
The Paladins will tee off at 7:40 a.m. on Sunday from hole No. 10 in the tournament’s final round.
