Samford third at ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Samford University men’s golf team fired a brilliant second-round score of 285 on Monday to move into third place at the 2013 ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate being held at the par-72, 6,565-yard Ridgepoint Country Club.

Samford carded a 36-hole score of 581 (296-285) on Monday and currently trails only first-place Austin Peay (282-284=566) and second-place Belmont (294-284=578).

Samford opened Monday’s competition with a first-round score of 296 but then exploded for a second-round tally of 285 to vault into third place. The Bulldogs were paced by stellar second rounds from Drew Aimone, Zach Hughes and Casey O’Toole. Aimone, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, fired a second-round score of 69, while Hughes posted a 70 and O’Toole carded a 71.

O’Toole finished Monday’s opening 36 holes of play tied for fourth place in the individual standings. He concluded the first day of competition with a two-round score of 3-under par 141 (70-71).

Fellow senior Aimone garnered a 36-hole score of 2-under par 142 (73-69) for the Bulldogs on Monday and jumped to seventh place out of 110 competitors. Hughes sits in the top 20 with a two-round score of 146 (76-70), while Bill Nabors and Chris Clouser follow at 152 (77-75) and 161 (80-81), respectively.

The 2013 ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate will resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) with a shotgun start.

 

Chattanooga fourth at BancorpSouth Intercollegiate

MADISON, Miss. – The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is fourth after 36 holes Monday at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss at the Reunion Golf and Country Club. UTC is at even-par 576 after rounds of 287 and 289.

Mississippi State is the leader at 16-under 560. Southeastern Louisiana checks in second at 574, followed by Central Arkansas at 575 and the Mocs another stroke back at 576.

Steven Fox posted twin rounds of 69 for a 6-under par total of 138. He is tied for second with Joe Sakulpolphaisan of Mississippi State, four shots behind  Central Arkansas’ James Newton at minus-10 (134). Davis Bunn is next for the Mocs. He fired rounds of 69 and 71 to shoot 4-under 140. He is fifth, two strokes behind Fox.

Chris Robb bounced back from a tough opening 77 with a 1-under par 71 in the afternoon. He is tied for 26th at 148 (+4). Benni Weilguni opened with a 74 and ended the day at 152, one shot ahead of Liam Johnston at 153.

Chattanooga returns to the tee Tuesday morning for the final 18.

 

UNCG tied for 11th at BancorpSouth Intercollegiate

MADISON, Miss. – UNCG freshman golfer Taylor Coalson sits in a tie for eighth place overall after 36 holes of the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Mississippi on Monday at the Reunion Golf and Country Club.

Coalson’s play helped the Spartans to an 11th-place standing in the team results heading into Tuesday’s final round of play, beginning with tee times between 8:30-9:06 a.m.

Coalson posted back-to-back 1-under par 71s to finish the day at 2-under par 142 and in a tie for eighth place. He is one of just 10 golfers under par after 36 holes. Central Arkansas’ James Newton leads the tournament after posting a 10-under par 134 with back-to-back rounds of 67 to hold a four-shot lead over two golfers at 6-under par.

The Spartans are tied for 11th place in the team standings with a two-round score of 602 (305-297) and are just four shots out of the top 10 as Troy owns a 598. Mississippi State holds a commanding 14-stroke lead, as it posted a 16-under par 560 Monday.

Senior Robert Hoadley is in a tie for 26th place after 36 holes with a 4-over par 148. Hoadley opened the day with a 3-over 75 before posting a 1-over par 73 to close out the day’s action. Sophomore Alex Ehlert rounded out the Spartans’ top three performers with a 61st place standing. Ehlert posted an 11-over par 155 (77-78) Monday.
