Wofford posts runner-up finish at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s golf team finished second at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

The Terriers were led by Charles Moore, who finished a career-best second, one stroke behind the tournament medalist. Moore fired a 69 in the first round to tie his career low, and then posted a 67 in the afternoon round to set a new career low. He finished the final round with a 74 for a total of 210.  His 67 is the lowest round and his 210 is the lowest total by any Terrier this season.

Grant Waggoner carded a 72 in the first round to break his career low by two strokes, before breaking it again in the second round with a 67.  In the final round, he shot a 78 for a total of 217 to finish in a tie for 16th, his best career finish.  The 217 broke his previous three-round tournament low by 16 strokes.

Next, Stuart McGoogan posted a 77-68-78=217 to tie for 20th, good for new career-best finish.  He also set a new career round and tournament low with his 68 in round two and 217 overall.  Brannan Hudson finished 71-74-74=219 and established a new three-round tournament low.  Cory Taylor posted a 71-72-77=220 to complete the Terrier lineup.

George Perkovich carded a 72-76-71=219 as an individual to finish in the top 30.  He, too, set a new career round low (71), three-round tournament low (219), and top finish (29th).  Brent McKenzie also competed as an individual and fired a 79-78-75=232.

As a team, The Terriers led after each of the first two rounds, posting 283 and 274.  In the final round, Wofford carded a 298 to finish with a total of 855, two strokes behind tournament champion East Tennessee State (853).  The 274 is the lowest round of the season by the Terriers. 

Radford finished third with a score of 290-281-290=861, and Appalachian State (287-281-294=862) and Elon (287-292-283=862) tied for fourth.

The top individual spot went to Appalachian State’s Caleb Keck, who fired a 67-70-72=209 to finish one stroke ahead of Wofford’s Moore.  Keck and Moore were joined on the all-tournament team by East Tennessee State’s Rhys Pugh (72-68-71=211) and Winthrop’s Kamito Hirai (68-72-71=211).

Wofford will return to the course on Sunday when it travels to the Ralston Creek Course at the Daniel Island Club in Daniel Island, S.C., to compete in the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

 

Keck wins, Appalachian State ties for fourth at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Caleb Keck earned the first medalist honors of his career as he fired a final-round score of 72 (E) on Tuesday to pace the field at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at Country Club of Spartanburg.

After setting a new career low after the first round of play with a 5-under 67, Keck beat out Wofford’s Charles Moore by a shot in the final to claim Appalachian’s first medalist of the season. The freshman carded a 67-70-72=209 (-7) to close out the tournament.

Keck’s 209 was not enough for the Mountaineers to remain in the top three in the team standings, as they tied for fourth place with Southern Conference rival Elon, scoring a 287-281-294=862 (-2). ETSU, which began the day in second place, came from behind to upend host Wofford with a final-round 288. The Bucs totaled 853 for the tournament, two shots better than the Terriers.

Junior Casey Komline was the only other Mountaineer in the lineup to finish in the top 15, turning a final-round 74 (+2) to go along with his 141 from the opening day to finish with a 215 (-1). Komline finished tied for 13th in the overall standings.

Freshman Lee Mitchell finished tied for 29th place with matching 73s after each round, giving him a 219 (+3) for his best three-round score of his young career.

Rounding out the Appalachian lineup was senior Josh Nichols, who was a shot behind Mitchell and tied for 34th place, and graduate student Daniel Walsh with a 74-72-76=222 (+6).

The Mountaineers now shift their focus to the Southern Conference Championship, beginning on Sunday at Ralston Creek in Charleston, S.C. The three-day event will feature all 11 SoCon teams, as Appalachian State looks to improve on its sixth-place finish from a season ago.

 

Elon ties for fourth at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Elon men's golf team posted its best round of The Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Tuesday to finish in a tie for fourth in its final event before the 2013 Southern Conference Championship.  The Phoenix finished the tournament with a mark of 862 (287-292-283).

Leading the way for the Maroon and Gold was Stuart Kaufman, who finished with a 3-under 213 (72-72-69) to tie for fifth individually.

Thanks to a tournament-best two eagles, John Somers was one of two Phoenix golfers to tie for 16th with a mark of 217.  The other was Will DiIanni.  Somers posted rounds of 76, 70 and 71 over his two days of play, while DiIanni went 72, 73 and 72.

Elon's other two players were Jack Adkins and Jeff Krieger, who tied for 40th out of the 88 golfers in the field.  Adkins followed up rounds of 70 and 78 on Monday with a third-round score of 73 to finish at 221.  Krieger tallied marks of 73, 77 and 71 for his 221.

Playing as an individual, Dylan Morgan was tied for the most pars in the field at 39.  He shot a 225 (76-77-72) over his three rounds of play.

East Tennessee State earned the team title, edging out host Wofford by two strokes.  ETSU finished at 853 (285-280-288), while Wofford was at 855 (283-274-298).  Finishing third was Radford (290-281-290--861).

Elon tied for fourth with Appalachian State (287-281-294--862).

Appalachian State's Caleb Keck earned individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 209 (67-70-72).

The 2013 Southern Conference Championship is up next for Elon.  The three-day event gets under way on April 21 in Daniel Island, S.C.

 

Furman finishes 11th at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Matt Brown’s 1-over 73 paced Furman to an 11th-place finish on Tuesday in the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the par-72 Country Club of Spartanburg.

Brown, a Brookeville, Md., native, finished at 2-over par for the tournament to share 20th place with fellow Paladin senior Anthony Aloi, who carded a 3-over 75 during final-round play.

East Tennessee State (-11) shot an even-par final round to overtake the host Wofford Terriers and claim a two-stroke victory.  Radford, Appalachian State and Elon rounded out the top five in the 16-team field.  Furman slipped from ninth to 11th after shooting a 16-over 304 in Tuesday’s final round.

Caleb Keck (-7) of Appalachian State fired a 72 in the final round to capture individual medalist honors.

Furman returns to action April 21-23, at the Southern Conference Championship on Daniel Island, S.C.

 

Western Carolina finishes 13th at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In its final tune-up before the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship next week, the Western Carolina men’s golf team finished 13th as play concluded Tuesday at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the par-72, 6,648-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.

WCU carded a final-round of 305 to slip out of its two-way tie for 10th over the final 18 holes, shooting 889 for the event.

The Catamounts were led by sophomore J.T. Poston, who finished tied for 20th overall at 218, slipping in the standings after a closing-round 4-over par 76 on the final day. Poston entered the final round at 2-under for the tournament, finishing tied with eight others in 20th.

Redshirt sophomore Collin Witiak came home in a tie for 50th, shooting 224 over the 54-hole event, including an 80 in Tuesday’s final round. Junior Jack Walsh finish tied for 62nd, shooting 79 in the final round for a two-day total of 226.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five was junior Greg Bunner with a team-low 2-over par 74 on Tuesday for a 227 tournament score that was good enough for 66th overall, and senior Steven Smith, who finished tied for 68th at 229 (75-78-76).

Playing unattached as an individual, sophomore Matthew Turner came home tied for 75th, shooting 80 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 231.

Second after 36 holes, East Tennessee State shot 10 strokes better than second-round leader and tournament host Wofford on Tuesday to rally to the team title by two strokes over the Terriers, 853-to-855.

Western Carolina now turns its attention to the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship, which will be contested April 21-23 at the Ralston Creek Course at the Daniel Island Club on Daniel Island, S.C., just outside of Charleston. The Catamounts look to improve upon last year’s 10th-place finish overall. Poston led WCU by finishing in a four-way tie for 10th place individually as a freshman, overcoming an opening-round 80 with back-to-back scores of 2-under 70.
