Appalachian State in third at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Highlighted by matching 67s (-5) by freshman Caleb Keck and junior Casey Komline on Monday, Appalachian State sits in third place after the first two rounds of the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
The Mountaineers fired a season-best 287-281=568 (-8), the two lowest rounds of the 2012-13 season, but trail host Wofford (283-274=557) by nine shots and ETSU (285-280=565) by three strokes.
Keck led the field and set a new career best after the opening round with his 67 but dropped a spot to second place after turning in a 70 (-2) after the second round. Keck ended the day with a 137 (-7) and a shot behind tournament leader, Charles Moore of Wofford.
Komline went the opposite route, as his best score came in the second round. After scoring a 74 (+2) to begin the day, the Vermont native responded with tying his season best with a 67 for a 141 (-3), which ties him for eighth place.
Following Keck and Komline was senior Josh Nichols with a 73-72=145 (+1). With the 1-over, Nichols is tied for 27th place in the 88-player field.
Rounding out the Appalachian lineup was graduate student Daniel Walsh (74-72) and freshman Lee Mitchell (73-73) with matching 146s (+2). The duo is currently tied for 34th place.
Play resumes on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. with another shotgun start, as the Mountaineers seek their first top-five finish since the Mission Inn Intercollegiate in October.
Elon fifth at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Stuart Kaufman shot two rounds of even par to lead the Elon men's golf team on day one of The Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Monday as the Phoenix sits fifth in the field of 16 teams with a score of 579 (287-292).
Kaufman's 144 (72-72) has him tied for 22nd among the 88 golfers.
Following Kaufman is Will DiIanni, who fired a two-round score of 145 (72-73) to sit in a tie for 27th.
John Somers rallied from a first-round 76 with a second-round 70 for a 146 on the day. Somers will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for 34th.
With a mark of 148 (70-78), Jack Adkins sits in a tie for 47th. He is followed by Jeff Krieger, who tallied a 150 (73-77) and is tied for 41st.
Playing as an individual, Dylan Morgan is tied for 70th with a score of 153 (76-77). Morgan had 26 pars during his 36 holes on day one.
Host Wofford leads the field with a mark of 557 (283-274). The Terriers lead second-place East Tennessee State (285-280--565) by eight strokes with a round to play.
Also ahead of Elon in the top five are Appalachian State (568) and Radford (571).
The Phoenix leads SoCon rivals Furman (9th, 582) and Western Carolina (T-10th, 584).
The individual lead is held by Wofford's Charles Moore, who had two sub-par rounds to finish at 136 (69-67).
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with one round.
Furman ninth at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Furman men’s golf team carded back-to-back rounds of 291 to hold ninth place after 36 holes in the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on Monday at the par-72 Country Club of Spartanburg.
Senior Anthony Aloi (-1) is tied for 15th place after shooting an even-par 72 in the opening round before firing a 1-under 71 in the afternoon round. Teammate Matt Brown (+1), currently tied for 27th place, posted a 2-under 70 in the first round and carded a 3-over 75 in round two. Freshman Wehman Hopke (+2) notched a 71 in the afternoon round to move into a share of 34th place.
The Paladins (+6) trail tournament leader Wofford (-19) by 25 strokes through 36 holes with East Tennessee State (-11), Appalachian State (-8), Radford (-5) and Elon (+1) rounding out the top five in the 16-team field.
The Terriers’ Charles Moore backed up a first-round 69 with a 5-under 67 on Monday afternoon to hold a one-shot lead.
Final round action is set for Tuesday with a shotgun start set for 9:30 a.m.
Western Carolina tied for 10th at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina posted a team score 584 through Monday’s 36 holes to stand tied for 10th with James Madison at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational being held at the par-72, 6,648-yard Country Club of Spartanburg. Sophomore J.T. Poston shot a 2-under par 142 with rounds of 70 and 72 to lead the Catamounts entering the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Western Carolina stood 12th after Monday’s opening round, shooting 9-over par 297 as a team on the opening 18 holes before advancing by trimming 10 strokes off its second round at 287. Collectively, the Catamounts carded 109 pars, 27 birdies and one eagle.
Poston was tied with five others for eighth after an opening-round 2-under par 70. He shot even-par 72 on the second 18 holes on the opening day.
Redshirt sophomore Collin Witiak shaved eight strokes off his opening-round 76 with a second-round 4-under par 68 to move into a tie for 22nd entering Tuesday’s third round. Likewise, junior Jack Walsh was seven strokes better the second time around, shooting 77 and 70 to move into a tie for 41st overall.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are senior Steven Smith and junior Greg Bunner, both tied for 70th overall at 153. Smith shot rounds of 75 and 78 with Bunner carding rounds of 76 and 77 on Monday.
Competing as an individual, WCU’s Matthew Turner fired rounds of 74 and 77 to stand tied for 63rd with a two-round score of 151 entering the final round.
Tuesday’s final round is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. tee time.
