Samford?s Aimone Named Men?s Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior Drew Aimone has been named the Southern Conference men’s golfer of the week for all competition Feb. 27 to March 5. The selection is made by the league office.

Aimone tied for second at the Samford Intercollegiate, which featured a trio of top-50 teams in No. 19 Auburn, No. 36 Vanderbilt and No. 50 Georgia Southern. In addition to GSU, the field also included fellow SoCon teams Furman and Western Carolina.

The Savannah, Ga., native, finished Tuesday with a 3-under 69 to give him a three-round, 3-under total of 213. He turned in a pair of sub-par rounds, also notching a 71 in the second round, en route to a 71.0 stroke average for the week. He finished behind only Vanderbilt’s Hunter Stewart, who is ranked 91st nationally. Aimone was one of just four golfers in the 94-man field to finish under par.

As a team, Samford finished fifth behind the three ranked teams and Winthrop in the 18-team field.

Samford is back in action at the Auburn Tiger Shootout in Auburn, Ala., on March 11-12.

Also nominated: John Duke Hudson (College of Charleston), Sam Echikson (Davidson) and Will Evans (Georgia Southern).
