DAVIDSON, N.C. – Led
by Sam Echikson’s 1-over 73, the Davidson men’s golf team posted an opening-round
297 as the Wildcats sit in first place after round one of the 2013 Davidson
College Invitational on Monday afternoon at River Run Country Club.
Davidson will enter the final round one ahead of Marshall
(298) and three clear of Gardner-Webb (300). James Madison is alone in fourth
following a 306, while Radford and Campbell are tied for fifth, 10 strokes off
the pace.
Marshall’s Nathan Kerns holds the top spot on the individual
leaderboard after posting the day’s only sub-par round, a 1-under 71.
Steve Jones (Gardner-Webb), Jared Carver (Campbell) and Cory
Taylor (Wofford) are currently tied for second at even par.
Freshman David Sargent posted a spring-low 2-over 74 for the
Wildcats and is one back of Echikson in a tie for seventh.
Also competing for the Wildcats are Richard Fountain
(75/T-11th), Todd Eckstein (75/T-11th), John Skeadas (76/T-19th) and individual
participants Ben Murray (74/T-7th), Alex Nianouris (76/T-19th) and Ralph Blasey
(81/T-42nd).
The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Elon tied for seventh
at Davidson College Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Will
DiIanni's first-round score of 75 led the Elon men's golf team through the
first round of the Davidson College Invitational on Monday. The Phoenix carded
a 310 as a squad and sits in a tie for seventh place with one round to play.
DiIanni's 75 has the sophomore in a tie for 11th out of 60
golfers in the event. He shot a 37 on the front nine before posting a 38 on the
back nine.
Jeff Krieger closely followed with a 77 and will enter
Tuesday's final round in a tie for 26th.
Both Stuart Kaufman and John Somers posted first-round 79s
to tie for 32nd. Finally, Jack Adkins' 80 has him in a tie for 42nd.
Marshall's Nathan Kerns finished the day with a 1-under 71
to hold the top individual spot at the conclusion of the round.
The 11-team field is led by host Davidson (297) following
one round. The Wildcats lead Marshall by one stroke and Gardner-Webb by three
shots. James Madison (306), Radford (307) and Campbell (307) sit just ahead of
the Phoenix.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played on
Tuesday at the River Run Country Club.
Wofford in ninth after
opening round of Davidson Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The
Wofford men’s golf team sits in ninth place after 18 holes of the Davidson
Invitational at the par-72, 7,208 yard River Run Country Club.
The Terriers shot a 311 and trail host and tournament leader
Davidson by 14 strokes.
Cory Taylor is tied for second after an opening round of 72,
while Charles Moore is in a tie for 11th after a 75. Brent McKenzie and Brannan
Hudson each carded an 82, while George Perkovich ended the day with an 85.
Marshall’s Nathan Kerns leads by one stroke after a round of
71.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, 36
holes to be played Monday, but frost on the course in the morning limited play
to only 18 holes.
The final round will commence Tuesday morning.
Furman third at
Samford Intercollegiate
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman
Preston Cole posted a 2-under par 70 to lead the Furman men’s golf team to a 4-over
292 and sole possession of third place after 18 holes in the Samford
Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,001-yard Hoover Country Club on Monday.
The tournament was scheduled to begin with 36 holes on
Monday, but the opening round was delayed approximately an hour due to frost
and golfers were unable to complete second round play due to darkness. Play
will continue at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday with the third and final round set to
begin immediately after the completion of round two.
Cole, a native of Greer, S.C., and a Riverside High School
product, holds a share of second place at 2-under, just one stroke behind first-round
leader Ashton Van Horne of Belmont University. Senior Anthony Aloi grabbed a
share of 10th place with an opening-round 72, while freshman Wehman Hopke
carded a first-round 73 to hold a share of 16th.
The Paladins trail first-round leader Vanderbilt by five
strokes and second-place Auburn by one stroke. Georgia Southern is in fourth
place with Winthrop and Montevallo tied for fifth entering play on Tuesday.
Georgia Southern in
fourth at Samford Intercollegiate
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The
Georgia Southern golf team is in fourth place after the first round of the
Samford Intercollegiate at Hoover Country Club on Monday.
The tournament was slated to play two rounds Monday but
frost delayed the start, leaving each team with about five holes left in round
two.
The Eagles shot a 7-over-par 295 as a team and went into the
second round eight strokes back of first-place Vanderbilt. Auburn (+3) is
second and Furman is third (+4).
Charlie Martin led the way for the Eagles with a 73 after
firing a 33 on his last nine. Scott Wolfes, Will Evans and Blake Olson carded
74s and are all tied for 27th. Hayden Anderson rounded out the group with a 76.
Second-round action picks back up Tuesday morning followed
by the third and final round.
Following the tournament at Samford, the Eagles will take a
week off before hosting the 34th annual Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights
Country Club on March 15-17.
Samford ninth at
Samford Intercollegiate
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Samford’s Casey O’Toole fired a 2-under par 70 on Monday to conclude the first
round of play tied for second place at the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate being
held at the Hoover Country Club.
The 54-hole competition was halted late in the second round
of play Monday and will be resumed Tuesday at 8 a.m. (CST). The teams will then
conclude the three-round tournament by playing the final 18 holes Tuesday at
the 7,001-yard, par-72 golf course.
Monday’s start time was delayed by approximately an hour due
to frost.
The field of this week's 2013 Samford Intercollegiate
consists of the following teams: Samford (host), Auburn, Belmont, Bowling
Green, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern,
Montevallo, Murray State, Presbyterian, Southern Illinois, Tennessee-Martin,
Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Vanderbilt.
Samford carded a first-round total of 298 Monday behind the
stellar performance from O’Toole. The Bulldogs’ senior native of Oneonta, Ala.,
opened the tournament with a front-nine score of 37 before turning in a fiery
33 on the second nine holes of play.
In last season’s Samford Intercollegiate, O’Toole earned individual
medalist honors by posting a two-stroke victory over second-place competitors
Dustin Korte and Richard Fountain. O’Toole finished the 54-hole tournament with
a 5-under-par 211 (73-66-72), while Korte and Fountain both carded three-round
scores of 891.
O’Toole’s second-round score of 66 in 2012 proved to be the
best round of the tournament and is the currently the low-mark round in Hoover
Country Club history.
Along with O’Toole’s 2-under par 70 on Monday, Samford’s
Drew Aimone carded a 73, while junior William Catanzaro followed with a 77. The
Bulldogs’ Bill Nabors and Mac Hennessy closed out the scoring with first-round
marks of 78 and 79, respectively.
Samford’s Chris Clouser competed as an individual and posted
an 18-hole score of even-par 72. Zach Hughes and Clay Nolen also played as
individuals and carded respective scores of 74 and 75. Nolen, the Bulldogs’
true freshman from Huntsville, turned in the best shot of the day as he drained
a hole-in-one on the par-3, 181-yard fifth.
Gabe Hyde also competed as an individual on Monday and
finished the first round with an 81.
Vanderbilt carded a team score of 287 and holds a
four-stroke lead over second-place Auburn (291). Furman (292), Georgia Southern
(295) and Montevallo (296) rounded out the top five at the completion of
Monday’s first round.
Individually, Belmont’s Ashton Van Horne sits in first place
at 3-under par 69, while Samford’s O’Toole, Vanderbilt’s Hunter Stewart and
Furman’s Preston Cole are all tied for second place at 2-under par 70.
Western Carolina tied
for 10th at Samford Intercollegiate
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Senior Kyle Wilson carded an opening-round even-par 72 on Monday to lead
Western Carolina in a two-way tie for 10th place at the Samford
Intercollegiate being held at the par-72, 7,001-yard Hoover Country Club. The
Catamounts shot 302 in the first round, sitting tied with Tennessee Tech just
six strokes outside of the top five.
Enduring an hour-long frost delay on Monday, the 18-team,
94-golfer field was unable to complete competition in the second round, leaving
approximately four holes to be played on Tuesday morning before the final round
will commence. Complete results from the 54-hole event will be made available
at the conclusion of play on Tuesday.
Wilson and sophomore teammate J.T. Poston were tied for
fourth in par-3 scoring after the first round, sitting tied for 10th and 16th,
respectively, on the individual leader board. Poston was one stroke in arrears
of his teammate after shooting 73 on Monday entering the second 18 holes.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five on Monday were sophomore
Matthew Turner (78) in a tie for 61st and senior Steven Smith (79)
and redshirt sophomore Collin Witiak (79) tied for 69th. Turner is competing in
just his second event this season after playing unattached as an individual at
the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley last
fall.
Tournament host and SoCon foe Samford shot 298 as a team to
sit just ahead of the Catamounts after 18 holes.
Teams will complete the second round on Tuesday morning
before tackling the third round to complete the event.
College of Charleston
eighth at Charleston Shootout
CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Senior John Duke Hudson led the College of Charleston men's golf team in the
opening round of the Charleston Shootout as he is currently even par and tied
for eighth place individually. The Cougars are in eighth place as a team with
+26.
Play was suspended due to darkness with no one completing
the full 36-hole day. The remainder of the second round and the final round of
play with begin Tuesday at approximately 8:15 a.m.
The tournament leader is currently USC Upstate at even par.
The Cougars are 11 shots back of the top five teams in the tournament.
Junior Neil Gowan, playing as an individual in the
tournament this week, shot a 2-under 70 in the first round and is currently
tied for 10th at 3-over par. Also in the top 25 is freshman Jackson Moore, who
shot an opening-round 73 and is at 2-over par.
Junior Alex Ellis got off to a hot start with three early
birdies in his first round and carded an opening 3-over. He is currently at
2-over and is tied for 28th place.
