Samford?s Aimone Named Men?s Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior Drew Aimone has been named the Southern Conference men’s golfer of the week for all competition March 20-26. The selection is made by the league office.

The selection is the second of the season for Aimone, who also took the award on March 6.

Aimone shared medalist honors at the Furman Intercollegiate over the weekend, firing a three-day total of 209, good for a 69.7 stroke average. The Savannah, Ga., native shot an opening-round 73 before following that up with a 3-under 69 on Saturday and a 5-under 67 on Sunday to claim a share of the individual title with No. 24 Scott Fernandez of Iowa State.

Aimone defeated six nationally ranked individuals, including five among the top 50 in the nation. All told, the field included 126 golfers.

Aimone’s efforts helped the Bulldogs vault from 14th place into fourth over the final two days of the tournament. SoCon foes Furman, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford were also in the 21-team field, and three of the teams in the field are ranked in the top 50 nationally, led by No. 15 North Florida.

The fourth-place finish is Samford’s best of the spring season.

Samford will next be in action April 2-3 as the Bulldogs head to Jonesboro, Ark., for the 2013 Arkansas State Invitational.

Also nominated: Casey Komline (Appalachian State), Richard Fountain (Davidson), Roy Dixon (UNCG), Davis Bunn (Chattanooga) and J.T. Poston (Western Carolina).
