Davidson ties for fifth at Seahawk Invitational
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sam Echikson and Richard Fountain tied for seventh, and the Davidson men's golf team finished tied for fifth at the 2013 Seahawk Intercollegiate hosted by UNCW on Monday afternoon.
After sharing the first-round lead, Fountain (71-79) carded a final-round 79 to finish with a 36-hole total of 150. Echikson (77-73=150), coming off his first collegiate individual title, paced the Wildcats on day two with a 73 to record his third top-10 showing of the spring.
Davidson, which entered the event with two team titles on the 2012-13 campaign, posted a two-day total of 617 (305-312) to collect its fourth top-five showing in the last five outings.
Also competing for the Wildcats were David Sargent (77-78=155), Todd Eckstein (80-82=162) and John Skeadas (81-87=168).
The host Seahawks claimed the team title with a 36-hole total of 604. Kent State finished one off the pace, while Maryland came in third at 609.
UNCW’s Payne McLeod fired a two-day score of 1-under 143 (72-71) to win the individual crown by five strokes over three others.
The event featured 12 teams (68 individuals) and was played on the par-72 Country Club of Landfall.
Davidson will enjoy a two-week break before returning to the course at the Irish Creek Collegiate on April 6-7 in Kannapolis, N.C.
College of Charleston 15th at The Hootie
AWENDAW, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s golf team got off to a good start in the first round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate but lost several strokes at the end of the first round and are currently in 15th place among an elite field.
Going into the 16th hole in the first round, the Cougars were in second place in the tournament but played the last three holes a combined 17-over par to drop down the leaderboard. The conditions were challenging with 50 mph wind gusts, and the stroke average for the first round was 79.
The tournament, held at the Bulls Bay Golf Club outside of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., was delayed until Monday due to rain on Sunday. The teams set off to play two rounds Monday, but the second round was halted due to darkness and will resume at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The third and final round is set to begin at approximately 9:30-10 a.m.
The Cougars shot 30-over par in round one and are 43-over currently in the team standings. There are four schools within five shots of each other at the top of the leaderboard, led by LSU at 13-over.
Junior Alex Ellis helped the Cougars get off to a solid start in windy conditions as he birdied three holes and shot a 1-under 36 on the front nine holes. Ellis would bogey five holes on the back nine and finish with a 6-over 78 for round one. Ellis is currently 3-over for his second round and tied for 35th on the leaderboard at 9-over for the tournament.
After shooting a 15-over 87 in round one, sophomore Zach Munroe played much more steadily in round two with two birdies and one bogey and is 1-under with six holes to play in his second round.
Second round of C&F Bank Intercollegiate canceled
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Monday’s second round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate has been canceled. Appalachian State sits in second place after completing just nine holes in Sunday’s opening round, while UNCG is tied for 21st.
The final round of the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday.
