Appalachian State finishes
tied for sixth at Mission Inn Spring Spectacular
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS,
Fla. – After beginning the final round of the Mission Inn Spring
Spectacular is seventh place, Appalachian State’s men's golf team moved up one
position and tied Florida Atlantic for the sixth spot, firing a team score of
301 on Sunday at Mission Inn Golf Course.
The Mountaineers could not beat their second-round total of
293 and matched their opening-round score for a combined total of 895 (+31).
Junior Casey Komline posted the best score of the tournament for Appalachian
State but was unable to improve his second-round, 69 (-3). Komline finished the
two-day event with a 74-69-76=219 (+3) and tied for 11th place.
For today's rounds, graduate student Daniel Walsh and
freshman Lee Mitchell led Appalachian with matching 74s (+2). Walsh's overall
score of 75-75-74=224 (+8) tied him for 27th place, while Mitchell's
76-76-74=226 (+10) tied him for 35th place.
Drawing even with Mitchell was senior Josh Nichols, who
fired a 76-73-77=226 (+10).
Rounding out the Mountaineer lineup was sophomore Eric
Eberspeaker with an 81-78-79=238 (+22).
Individually, freshman Caleb Keck led all individuals for
the tournament with a 73-73-75=221 (+5), one shot better than Georgia State's
individual player, Damon Stephenson. Also scoring high as individual was senior
Drew Harris with a 75-75-76=226 (+10), tying him with Mitchell and Nichols.
Indiana captured the team title with a 292-286-291=869 (+5),
two shots better than runners-up Purdue and Virginia Tech. Georgia State
finished fourth (875), while Old Dominion (887) placed fifth.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, March 24, as
they travel to the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. The
tournament hosted by William & Mary will be held at Kingsmill Resort.
Georgia Southern ties
for sixth at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. –
Justin Thomas shot a 70 and Bobby Wyatt carded a 71 to lead Alabama to a 285
team score and a second consecutive Schenkel Invitational team title Sunday at
Forest Heights Country Club. Georgia Southern tied for sixth.
It’s the third Schenkel championship for the Crimson Tide,
who posted a three-round team score of 848 (-16) and topped second-place Texas (-6)
by 10 strokes. It’s also the seventh straight year an SEC team has won the
tournament.
North Florida (+4) jumped from fifth ahead of Florida and
into third on the strength of Sean Dale’s 67, the lowest individual score of
the day. The Ospreys shot a team low 283 (-5) for the round. Florida (+9)
dropped to fourth, and UCF (+13) maintained its spot in fifth.
Thomas won the individual title after carding a three-round
total of 207 (-9). The sophomore, who
started the day with a three-shot lead, extended the margin early by birdieing
three of his first four holes.
He added an eagle at the par-5 seventh before finishing the
front nine with a bogey. He parred the first eight holes of the back nine and
bogeyed 18 for his 70.
Brandon Stone of Texas shot a 69 Sunday to finish 6-under
for the tournament and take second place. Dale (-5) moved into a tie for third
with Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt, who carded a 71 Sunday.
Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes (-4), who played his final
three holes of each round a combined 6-under par, posted a 70 to tie for fifth.
It’s the first top-five finish for an Eagle at the Schenkel
since Logan Blondell placed third in 2008. Texas’ Cody Gribble (-4) shot a 71
to finish in a tie with Wolfes.
Georgia Southern, which teed off on hole 10 Sunday, charged
up the leaderboard after the turn as the Eagles’ top foursome played the front
nine at a combined 4-under par.
GSU went into its final two holes deadlocked with Kentucky
and Vanderbilt in a tie for sixth after Hayden Anderson shot 3-under-par on his
final four holes and eagled his last hole of the day to log a 73.
Charlie Martin kept the rally going by birdieing hole 7, one
of three birdies on the front nine for the sophomore en route to posting a 73.
Wolfes followed by birdieing hole 7and parring 8 and 9, and
the Eagles moved up five spots to finish in a tie for sixth with Kentucky
(+19).
Vanderbilt fell to eighth (+23).
Will Evans played the front nine at 1-over and had two
birdies and three bogeys on the back nine to log a 74. Blake Olson finished
strong again, playing his last nine at 2-over to post a 79.
Georgia Southern’s Matt Mierzejewski, Caleb Morris and
Christian Humber all played as individuals. Mierzejewski shot a 76 Sunday to
finish the tournament with a 226, and Morris carded a 75 for a tournament total
of 229. Humber shot an 83 and finished the tourney with a 241.

Intercollegiate April 8-9 at Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla.
College of Charleston
finishes 14th at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. –
Junior Alex Ellis finished 14th individually and the College of Charleston men’s
golf team finished 14th at the 2013 Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia
Southern.
The Cougars shot rounds of 297-301-301 for a total of 899
and a 35-over par team score. Alabama shot 16-under par for a 10 shot victory
over runner-up and defending national champion Texas.
The Cougars finished 10 shots back of making the top 10 in
the tournament.
Ellis, who shot 2-under 70 for his first round, finished
with a 2-over 74 and a 1-over 217 for the tournament.
Freshman Josh Lorenzetti was the Cougars’ second-best
finisher for the tournament as he carded a round of 74 in the final round and
finished eight shots back of Ellis in a tie for 46th place overall.
Up next, the Cougars will play in The Hootie at Bulls Bay
Golf Club on March 24-26 with some of the best teams in the country.
