seventh at Mission Inn Spring Spectacular
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS,
Fla. – Appalachian State’s men's golf team completed two of the three
rounds of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular and sits in seventh place, as
junior Casey Komline paced the Mountaineers with a 74-69=143 (-1) Saturday
afternoon at Mission Inn Golf Course.
The Mountaineers finished the opening day with a 301-293=594
(+20), 17 shots behind tournament leader Purdue. Komline's 143 placed him all alone
in fifth place in the overall standings. Senior Josh Nichols (76-73=149) is
tied for 24th place and graduate student Daniel Walsh (75-75=150) is slotted
31st.
Freshman Lee Mitchell (76-76=152) and sophomore Eric
Eberspeaker (81-78=159) rounded out Appalachian State's lineup.
Individually, freshman Caleb Keck closed out his two rounds
with a 73-73=146 (+2), the second-best score for an individual in the
tournament. Redshirt senior Drew Harris finished four shots behind Keck, tying
Walsh for 31st place.
The Boilermakers have a one-shot lead over Big Ten foe Indiana,
while Florida Atlantic and Georgia State are currently tied for third, each
firing a 291-294. Appalachian State follows fifth-place Virginia Tech (587) and
sixth-place Old Dominion (592) on the leaderboard.
Appalachian State looks to move up the standings in the
final round of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular set for Sunday.
Georgia Southern 11th
at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. –
Justin Thomas shot a 2-under-par 70 to lead Alabama to a 281 team score as the
Crimson Tide took over first place in the 34th Annual Schenkel Invitational
after second-round action Saturday at Forest Heights Country Club.
Thomas leads the tournament at 7-under par. Alabama’s Bobby
Wyatt shot a 70 to move to 4-under for the tournament and into second, a stroke
ahead of teammate Cory Whitsett (-3), who carded a 71 Saturday. Cody Gribble
posted a 68 to lead Texas and jump into a tie for third with Whitsett and teammate
Brandon Stone.
Alabama (-7 Saturday), Texas (-2 Saturday) and Maryland (even
Saturday) were the only teams to shoot even par or better on a warm and windy
Georgia day. The Crimson Tide (-13), the defending Schenkel champions, hold a
two-stroke lead over Texas (-11) heading into the final round, and Florida is
third (+5).
Maryland jumped from ninth to fourth behind a 67 from Tom
Harris and a 71 from Sean Bosdosh. Ole Miss moved up from last place into a tie
for eighth after shooting 1-over 289 as a team. Tom Brown’s 67 led the way, and
Blake Morris carded a 71.
Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes finished strong for the
second day in a row by posting birdies on two of his final three holes to card
a 72. The sophomore is tied for sixth at 2-under.
UAB’s Sam Love, playing as an individual, fired the low
round of the tournament Saturday, a 66, which shifts him into a tie for sixth
(-2).
UCF’s Greg Eason shot a 68 to move into the tie for sixth (-2)
along with Kentucky’s Ben Stow, who shot a 71 for the second straight day.
Georgia Southern is in 11th place (+17), a stroke back of
Kentucky (+16) and three strokes behind North Texas and Ole Miss (+14).
Hayden Anderson posted an even-par 72 and played his last 10
holes at 2-under for Georgia Southern. Will Evans birdied his final hole to
shoot a 75. Charlie Martin bogeyed two of his last four holes to post a 77,
while Blake Olson struggled on his first eight holes but played his final 10
holes at 1-over and posted an 80.
Georgia Southern’s Matt Mierzejewski, Caleb Morris and
Christian Humber all played as individuals. Mierzejewski birdied two of his
last three holes to post a 78, Morris shot an 81 and Humber carded a 77 after
birdieing three of his final five holes.
Action finishes Sunday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.
College of Charleston
14th at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. –
Junior Alex Ellis birdied two of his final three holes to shoot a 1-over par 73
as the College of Charleston men’s golf team is currently in 14th place heading
into the third and final round Sunday at the Schenkel Invitational.
After an opening 297, the Cougars shot a team score of 301 Saturday
for a total of 598 (+22). Alabama put together a 7-under par 281 to jump into
the lead at 13-under par for the tournament.
Ellis, who opened the tournament Friday with a 2-under 70,
is now tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard (-1), six shots back of the
leader, Justin Thomas (-7) from Alabama.
After an opening 78, freshman Josh Lorenzetti came back with
a 1-over 73 with three birdies in his second round.
